Hi,

my steering gear box is leaking pretty bad. there is also quite a bit of play (give, gap.etc) in the steering wheel.
I was thinking rebuild with new rubbers and stuff. But it is not easy to find a good mechanic who can tackle such a thing as I have seen DIY posts here. knowing the mechanics here, there is no way they can do a clean job of the rebuild.

Plus other mercedes models parts (126, 124, 140) new and used are dirt cheap here.
My question is: is there a mercdes alterative for the w463 steering box? I have read that the 124 is pretty close. this route would be much cheaper even with minimum adjustment.

You can have the s/box re-conditioned, You can source such specialists on the web site.  Alternatively, I know of some one going to or about to break a W463, if he O K's it, I will post his contact details a little latter on, as with details of s/box reconditioners.

Cheers,

Across the border in Dubai there might be a garage that can help. They do driveshaft balancing as well so maybe they can tackle this:

sourcing parts abroad would be a costly option, as the part is quite heavy.
sourrcing a mechanic for the rebuilt will require a long process of looking for a mechanic who actually worked on such things.
If other mercedes S/box fits it would be a plug and play job, hence reducing the risk of a botched rebuild.

many thanx

that would be an option also, but I wanted a local fix. I am sure I can find someone to work on it here. it is just the process of finding the right mechanic that I am trying to avoid as I know it will take a long time.
