Any advice replacing/buying rear springs?
Hi - managed to find a few threads about springs (well at least that they are 'progressive' and the tendency to break) - but can anyone offer me advice/hints/tips (including tools required) before I attempt replacement?
Haven't yet purchased (MB prices scared me so looking elsewhere) so again any suggestions welcome. General use and tight budget...
Cheers
Stewart
As you say several threads on this. If you can find a price for GKN springs as they seem to offer a lot of options rather than just the long and short wheelbasr that most aftermarket offer.
I found it much easier to undo radius arm bolts ( 24mm spanner) than to compress springs, though if you haven't replaced radius arm bushes, unlikely they will undo, so you will have to compress springs, probably need 3 spring compressors to do back springs, at the very least you will have to take shocks off.
Remove the dampers (shocks), lift the rear of the vehicle by chassis and there is enough clearance as the axel drops to get the springs out without compressors. Watch out for handbrake line too.
MB offer a whole range of different spring rates. One of the workshop manuals has a table, I'll see if I can dig it out.
Gav has allready put the info up, you'll be sorry you asked..
Also, talk to Gav about the springs prices. Because I am a MB parts nut (i.e it has to be MB) he did manage to get me some great prices on my front springs.
