Alternator re-assembly
I've just bought a replacement alternator for my newly acquired 300D (1986, 617.931) from DFJ in Preston.
Stupidly I have lost the piece of paper that had a note of the assembly order. From memory it was:
washer | fan | washer | pulley | washer | thick washer/ head head thing with slot for woodruff | split washer | nut
...but that doesn't seem right as the final thick washer then doesn't engage in the woodruff key (too high up on the shaft). In fact I can't seem to fine any combination on either the old or the new shaft that is right!
Looking around, the only guide I could find:
www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/294656-refreshing-alternator-om617.html
Wasn't quite the same either (I seem to have one additional thin washer and the thick washer I have is as I describe above rather than the very thick one without the hex and woodruff key they show)
just wondered if anyone else had a note or remembered the correct order?
From what I know there is very little margin for things being out of alignment with these?
Thanks in advance.
This may help. Mercedes EPC Parts list for 617.931 regards Tony.
.
Stating the obvious, is the woodruff key square or parallel in its slot?
Any chance of photos to be posted on the forum?
Your description of the washer layout sounds fine but there is no description on the sizes (thickness) of them.
Cheers,

Thanks for the swift replies
Yes the woodruff is square. Thanks also for the service page Tony, unfortunately it doesn't show the washers.
Having looked at it some more, I came to the conclusion that the shaft length is the problem.. the new unit it a few mm shorter than the old one. I spoke to the guys at DFJ and arranged to send it back today (hence no photos), I'll keep you posted on what they say (I'll post photos also when I get it back).
Photos of the G to follow shortly also!
