Re: After Market STT Turbo's Fitted To Early G's

Hi
OM617 normally aspirated engines converted by TB Turbos and STT used components from other factory produced " non Mercedes"   turbo engines but the turbos were setup with reduced boost settings to lower the chances of internal damage to the OM 617 engine ..playing with the "Aldi"can increase the boost but may cause terminal engine failure as a direct result .. the OM617A turbo engine was built by Mercedes for a non G wagon application ..fitted to the G wagon it will enhance the perfomance but being a 1980's designed engine using early turbo technology it is not as good as later MB turbo engines that require serious retrofit manhours and materials expenses only justified if the host G' wagon is in immaculate condition ( hard to find ) and getting to be almost impossible....

Re: After Market STT Turbo's Fitted To Early G's

All I know, STT as a company are no longer.  The STT turbo is a low pressure charger, operating at 7 psi to 9 psi boost pressure.

Useful only in maintaining speed in an incline, other than that, it is not very impressive system, unless towing.  Helps the engine, if fitted with an intercooler - reduces thermal stresses to the engine.

Its fitment; in cases where the injector pump was re-calibrated, would improve engine performance but not all fitments went that far due to cost constraints.

Cheers,

Had to add these pics...was very taken by this self build turbine starter at this years tractor pulling Euro Finals in Westphalia...not a 617 man myself [ v. old technology ] and suffered the TB turbo job on a neighbours 460 in the 80's...opened the pump up and it ate pistons on the mway, although the lads at Kendal were great and I fitted two kits to Massey 590's [also hard on the pistons but they were perkins 4236's !! ]

Tony, Is that a generator or a compressor?
