463 Gear Selector?

I've been told that Mercedes has discontinued the 463 automatic gear selector and that they will now only supply a LHD biased one (the gear denotation is on the passenger, not the drivers side).

Does anyone know if this is correct?

I assumed this was a shared part and therefore despite RHD 463s being sold in smaller numbers, this would also effect other auto Mercedes products of a similar age?

The specific car in question is a 2000-2001 G500; however, again, I assume, the gear selector is shared by other 463 autos?

Re: 463 Gear Selector?

I don't think there are any other RHD G's from that period, certainly no G300td's and I don't think any G320's either.
suppose there is a chance the part is shared with another model.

What direction does your selector move from 4th to D, I don't know why, but I got a funny feeling that is different on LHD's to.

Re: 463 Gear Selector?

In general the gear shift mechanisum does tend to change here and there.  There is no distinction in that between the LHD and RHD models.  What does differ of course is the slotted plated and the pathway the selector rod travels in the pattern of that slotted cover, these do distinguish the LHD and RHD gear set up.

Breifly looking up the part numbers for these; the permutations become too large to contemplate analysing an answer.  This is just looking at the 500G's and G500 versions, not even looked at the other W463 versions.

It is now a matter to redifine the question.  What is the matter with your mechanisum, that you think you need anew?
These, theorectally, should not go wrong and at worse could with a strip, clean and lubricate type answer.

For the sake of the slotted cover, I find it difficult to imangine M/Benz would not produce any more but given your vehicle details (PMed) and a bit more understanding of your complaint, can take this up with M/Benz for you.

Cheers,

Re: 463 Gear Selector?

Hi guys, here is the Readers Digest version: -

Pre my collection of the G, the dealer had my car inspected, they were unhappy with the gear selector; therefore, they asked for the Mercedes specialist to fit a new gear lever selector. I believe the issue was that the car would sometimes slip out of gear; however, I may be wrong on this point.

Before I collected it, the dealer called and said the gear selector had been replaced but that the wood trim was taking a bit longer. Would I mind if they sent it after I collected the car and would pay to have it fitted at my convenience?

I collected the car and the wood arrived with me a few days later.

Whilst getting my snow tyres fitted by a small garage who know old Mercedes well, I asked them to fit the trim. They came back puzzled and said that the trim was the right configuration but upside down. I put two and two together and worked out that my new Gear Selector was LHD (the wooden trim was RHD, hence the reason it would fit upside down). I called Joe (Spider) and said, "when you sit in your car, can you see the P R N D 4 3 2 1 markers on your side of the gear selector, or are they on the opposite side (the passenger side)?" Joe's response was, "I am in my car as we speak and the P R N D, etc are on my side." I have attached a photo of the current set up.

I then called the dealer explained the situation, he asked me to speak with the independent Merc garage he uses. I went down to see them and explained the wood trim didn't fit and I believed it was because the gear selector was the wrong one (LHD not RHD). They checked and said, "yes, you're right, the wood doesn't fit" and said they'd look into it.

They called me today and said, our parts supplier (a Mercedes main dealer) says Mercedes don't supply RHD gear selectors any longer, hence why they sent us a LHD one. I suggested I wasn't sure this was correct and hence the thread!

Fixwin has contacted me, and in typical efficient style, has explained that yes Mercedes do still supply RHD gear selectors, given me the part number, told me that the gear selector is shared with the early Mercedes ML and that Germany have them in stock.

I've gone back to the independent Mercedes specialist and given them the part number.

As it stands, this looks like another great example of the power of this forum; however, it also seems to be another example of the downside of G-ownership. Too many specialists and the mainstream Merc dealers don't have a clear understanding of the cars or part numbers.

Ian, it'll be happy ever after when the Indy Merc garage sorts it. ;)

Re: 463 Gear Selector?

Hi Aero,

Just saw your picture, the gear selector is from a S-class 'W140' 98-00 version last of the best S-class's ever made!

You can hunt down Burlwalnut version on ebay as a cheap option.

Re: 463 Gear Selector?

I have attached a pic of my gear selector which has the markings on the driver's side. The above pic (of Joe's ?) has them on the passenfer's side like a LHD. Which one are you after?
Incidently, the gear selector cut out doesn't hold the gear stick in place.
