Can anyone recommend a G wagen gearbox specialist in the London or surrounding area please.

I have a smooth and fully functioning automatic gearbox but an increasingly stiff gear lever with restricted moevement.  Gearoil and filters changed recently resulting in no improvement.

Any suggestions on cause ?

Thanks

Ask for Arun at VA Transmissions, tell him Rakesh suggested you to him.

For your information, I would like to declare that he is my cousin.  I am not driven by keeping this in the family, as it were, but because of him as a professional service provider, they are not necessarily specialist in G-Wagens, but work on all makes and models.  If other service providers were known to me in that area, I would have mentioned them too.

Re: 463 automatic gearbox

Hi
Try doing a clean and lube job on the  linkeages from the lever to the gearbox ..also the fulcrum at the base of the gear lever..WD 40  directed with the plastic probe is a good start.... two people are required one inside operating the lever and one underneath lubeing the waggly bits..  once everything is free use some aerosol chain grease on the moving parts......

Re: 463 automatic gearbox

I had the same problem and followed Fixwins direction, seemed to help for a while then the situation just became worse - not I hasten to add through Fixwins instructions! .

I had it down at MB Brooklands - just outside London and worth a visit - and they took it apart and found there is a small plastic shield that can crack and break off falling into the running slot where the gear stick then can wedge it, making the gear stick very stiff and in my case impossible to move with out loads of jiggling. Am trying to find the part they replaced will go to the past bills and see what I can dig up.

In the mean time if you want to check it quickly MB Brooklands will do a 'Pit Stop' service where you can just turn up and they will take a look and diagnose it for you (its a free service) They should then be able to give a recommendation and then you can source from your own supplier. If you do go down ask for either Gordon or Duncan (they have the most knowledgeable on G's)

Re: 463 automatic gearbox

Dear G ers

Well great news.  I remembered I knew a very nice chap who works at Mercedes of Brighton.  He said his mechanics would take a look.

They disconnected the gear lever from the gearbox.  Gearbox could be operated with a little finger.  Problem therefore isolated to vehicle, rather than gearbox.

The selector has been replaced for £555 (incl.VAT) , the selector alone costs £305.  Job done, vehicle back to normal; with full gearbox operation in all gears.

So here were the signs - gear lever becoming stiffer and refusing to shift below D.  Then later gear lever also getting stiiffer between P, R, D and N and finally refusing to move out of P when vehicle warm.  All now resolved.

Mercedes of Brighton did a great job.  Micky is happy again and mightily relieved that he did not need a new gearbox.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments.

Re: 463 automatic gearbox

Thanks for the post Micki,

Having read your post, has alerted me to something on my 500 which is just starting to stiffen beyond the D.

P, N, R and D are all still fine. Now I just had a service on mine and they forgot to take out the service warning light and it has overstepped the interval (having been driven down to Greece). The light now comes on constantly (and is REALLY annoying - especially since I know the service was done....AND the money paid!). Could this be part of the problem, or is the g-box a purely mechanical link (I know that on some electronic-controlled gearbox cars, the autobox can go into a 'safe' mode until it is cleared - do you know whether this could be the case in the G500?).

Re: 463 automatic gearbox

Hi Phileas
I am not an expert.  here is my experience:  at the outset, the gear shift was getting stiffer to move through the box, initially with resistance from D to next notch down - which is 4 I think.
Then I could no longer shift the lever below D at all and thought it was a block to save the gearbox, but I do not think it was.
This was not picked up during 2 services.  Then the gear lever got very notchy between P, R, N and D which clearly indicated a problem.
I have to say that I do not think this has any link to the service warning light - none showed on mine.  But you need to check that out.  I woudl certainly take the car back to the garage and get them to cancel it, if it was missed at the service.

Hope that helps

Micky
