Spotted this.......rather nice.

i have driven this vehicle on a 30 mile trip and it is indeed a rare preproduction prototype from steyr 'fully loaded' with leccy windows/cruise/air con etc -certainly one for an officianado of the g wagen /all badged up puch in a very nice green metallic /the 602 sprinter derived factory fit turbo diesel goes really well and is good on diesel -nice truck .
i know the owner and i can speak to him directly if needed just pm me /he is going to change to a swb base g as where he lives is all controlled parking and the spaces are swb shaped not lwb -shame !
I too have see this one, and did consider it, very well appointed on the inside and much as Axel has commented. THough for me, a wee bit too rich for my current circumsances.
Spider1V
what ! Lord Askew of beanconsfield considering a turbo diesel g wagen with your reputation ... oh well..
Sorry to disappoint you but as I told Fixwing when he was doing up the truck this is NOT a pre production. You only have to look at the chassis number to see they reproduced the 290 LWB in right hand drive a good period before its build date.
It was originally imported by Automotive Technik together with three or four other five door 290s as well as a couple of vans one of which I own. I visited AT when they first took delivery of the vehicles. This particular vehicle had been pre registered in Germany by Steyr Puch as it was used as a promotional vehicle. I believe it had originally been ordered by a company in India but they latter canceled hence Merc used it as a demo before releasing it to AT.
It originally had the large circular PUCH badge as did all those purchased by AT. By these where changed to the Steyr Puch badge used on the PInz, as AT where building the Pinzgauer at the time and made them look more distinctive to to the Merc units sold by Caversham or Merc direct.
All the money and then some, no alloys or arches either, Howards van is much more appealing than this vehicle.
Shame it doesn't have the split rear doors, I like them.
Hi All
the story I got from Austria was that it was built mid 1997( to a Steyr Puch inhouse purchase order code 597) to be used as a "demonstrator" using the 602 / 296 turbo diesel / wet intercooled engine and a 722 / 331 auto gearbox on a 460 chassis with drum rear brakes Recaro seats and rubber floor covering ...it had a miscellany of "odd" 460 /463 parts put into it (even "Wolf" wheel arch protectors) fuse box and cruise control stalk have German legend. bullbar was factory fit ..the finished product was costed to the last D'mark and I was told as a result the production model 290 tds were built very basic with lots of "extras" ... the service and operating handbooks have coloured matching pictures on the front covers of it in Alexandrite Green ... to the best of my knowledge there is no record of any earlier LWB RHD 461/290 TD badged Steyr Daimler Puch to this specification in the Archives ....Production Mercedes Benz star badged models to the same specification were special order.... none were badged TD but had chrome" turbo diesel "lettering on the offside upper rear panel.None of the production ones were fitted with "Wolf" wheel arch protectors which in fact do not show up on the EPC for this vehicle.

I can vouch for Fixvin's data as being accurate from Austria and Steyr Puch
Possibly not all would have come to the UK market?
Gav
gavs info will be right ,and it tallys with fixwin - this vehicle is a special internal order between steyr puch and mercedes benz with a very unusual/ high spec for a 461 type g which are more orientated towards 'working type' vehicle and as gav has stated in his research the 2nd one made. it is rare and drives very nicely-good truck, interesting that some of the early production were for super g extra lwb 3400 mm wheelbase (fire engines etc)
So we agree that this is not a prototype as stated further up??
fred i was told that it was a pre prod proto ,but going by the info from gav helme i would say it is the first off of a trial hi spec 461 so a 'one off ' -yes i think it is -pre prod maybe not as it 'was and is' on the production list gav has produced from merc so it is for sure a quite special 461 'one and only hi-spec first ever rhd 461 lwb' and that cannot be bad/ bit fruity on the price but i feel sure there is some negotiation room .
Yes a very nice G, despite being rare does any one else think this over priced hence it being for a sale a long time?
29k buys you so much in 4x4 market
when there is a albeit a bit scruffy g500 up for £20k its too rich
Hi All
the Vin number is VAG46133627913513
all Mercedes badged 461 models have a vin number starting WDB
If it was a) RHD and b) SWB I'd be interested at that price.
That seems a bit odd....
Deserve a look , not expensive !!! Sruffy ? doesnt look bad to me ... Not sure why people obsessed with rhd , i drive both rhd and lhd and cannot see any issues !!!
Yes. Looks a good motor.
EDIT: in wrong place
@fredecosse
You haven't seen my wife drive
Hi Ian
What seems odd?
The VAG and WDB?
All Steyr Puch G's start VAG and all MB G's start WDB it's how it is
Circa 15,000+ Steyr badged G's built and circa 200,000+ MB badged G's built in the last 35 years
They have all followed the same principle
Gav
Gotcha...in fact I thought it was a ref to the other car........
Thanks for putting me right.
Such a lot of discussion about my old company car. Happy days! It replaced the earlier LHD G300 Turbo intercooled (463) which, unfortunately, Graz wanted back; somebody in management remembered that I had it. That one I was sorry to hand back, but the succession of G290 models (461) I had subsequently were all superb vehicles, be they station wagons or vans. As a matter of interest, R 49 OTF had drums at the rear, whereas R 48 OTF was the first all-disc 461. That's out there somewhere too.
This vehicle is now back with me - at least until my SWB is up and about. This 461 is a very nice drive, though the goat tracks that pass for roads in my area make for some interesting encounters...
The SWB will be coming with me to SA at some point in the future, the 461 will be posted for sale when dates become more sharply into focus - trying to organise for shipping 2 G's and clearing on the other side will be far too much excitement for me.
If anyone might be interested in the 461 around end of June (when I'm guesstimating the SWB could be running around under it's own power), keep it in mind. PM me if you need any further info...
Just by way of an update.
This 461 290GD is now for sale by the owner - on this site - under classified ads...
