Would like to change rear middle lap belt to 3 point belt in back of swb 460. Can buy 3 point harnesses cheaply but not sure where to mount centre chest harness, any suggestions ?
Cheers

In a SWB? Sure if you don't bring the wife!

Either that or get a LWB with the folddown seats.

Would also like to know if someone finds an easy solution for the 3 point belt. Perhaps an anchor on the roof with a clip that allows it to be deatched to still fold seats...

Don't do it!. They are lethal.
We have 4 children and although they do love to use the rear seats I don’t like it one bit. Hence the need for a proper people carrier as well as the G.

Good plan. Then you would only kill one of them and I guess if you have 4 you can afford to lose one. Problem solved then. Oh no hang on still need a 3-point for the middle seat. Bummer may then end up with one paralyzed for life as well. Doh. :(

Was attempting to make a serious point though. It never ceases to amaze me what people will risk with their children. Are they completely stupid or is it a calculated decision?

What’s up with a people carrier with 190+bhp,300+Nm torque (from 1900rpm) and 4WD
(no it's not a a weird Jap import, it's German)

3rd 3 point rear seat belt ?

Excuse my ignorance guys, but what is the problem with the central lap belt.... is it not good for children? My 10 year old (1.50 metres tall) travels ocsasionally in that spot, while the two side seats are occupied by my other two children. Is that a problem? Yeah, I am sure that the 3 point belt is better, but is there anything wrong with it?

Thanks,

A lap belt will not position correctly on a small adult / child. For it to be effective it needs to sit on the pelvic bones. Even then it’s obviously no as effective as a 3-point belt. However next time you sit a child in a lap belt have a look at where the belt sits. It will be above the pelvic bones. It is across the stomach. Imagine the forces applied by the belt in a collision, even a low speed one and the subsequent injuries. Hence the adoption of all 3 point belts in newer cars.

There are types of 4-point conversion available. Snag is, as the previous posts indicate, where do you place anchor points?

Given the very substantial nature of the rear seats in a G I would imagine it is possible to attach anchor points to the seat back. Wouldn’t pass a proper crash test I guess but certainly better than just the lap belt.

Anyway thats why I won’t use lap belts for children

How about a 4 point harness, with the 2 chest straps bolted behind the the seat back on the rear interior side panels ?
