A week ago I did my Monthly on the grass test of 4 wheel drive and diff locks as usual, all OK except the 4 wheel drive seemed to stick in and I had to reverse to free it (or so I thought). A few days later I was driving along when there was a fairly loud metallic clank from underneath but nothing worse so I thought nothing of it, then, yesterday, after a 150 mile trip to France and back I was descending the ferry ramps when almighty metallic "bang" from underneath, so loud I thought the car behind had rear ended me, I stopped waiting for the appearance of a gearbox in the rear mirror but again nothing, selected gears fine,no noises,no vibrations, all in full working order, ANY IDEAS??

Rog, You'll have to get underneath and have a good look. I'd say it could be a broken spring or maybe a sheared shock absorber / mounting. Certainly sounds like something is loose or out of place and ocasionally comming into contact with something else. A good investigation underneath should solve the problem. Let us know what you find.

could it be the clutch

Thanks Rusty, I have had it in the local garage who have greased everything underneath and inspected it but there seems nothing amiss down below, however, I bought it out of the garage ,drove to Truro and back (50miles) and on one occasion when stationary I heard a new ticking noise (like a bad valve on a petrol engine) ,when I dipped the clutch to move off it disappeared never to return, about 6 gearchanges later I dipped clutch to go 3 to 4 and the clutch felt different, like the ABS feeling under severe braking but not a repeated bump underfoot just the one bump from the clutch pedal, my clutch/plate/bearing has been noisy for Months but it never slips, do clutches break up as well as wear out?? could this be a clutch problem? gearshift still feels perfect, regards, rog

Rog, Get yourself a set of earmuffs  Seriously, the only problem I have experienced with the clutch ( when I first got the G ) was sometimes the pedal clearance ( play ) would vary :? Then one day no clutch at all so I removed the master cylinder as the piston had not returned to its normal position. On stripping it down I found the small non return valve at the bottom of the piston had come adrift. After working out how it went together I re-riveted over the end and have had no problems ever since. Always check the simple, easiest and less expensive things first. If your problem persists you could renew the hydraulic fluid first unless it has been done recently. Apart from that hopefully someone else will pitch in with their experiences. Clutches can break up but I doubt that's your problem as I'll bet the G clutch is well heavy duty.

clutch

Thanks Rusty, All fluids were changed 8k miles ago, the mechanic couldn't check oil in transfer box cos he couldn't undo nut but says its not leaking so everything liquid is all up to the levels, its in for MOT tomorrow so I might try to get a price for a clutch change when I've a few more pennies, any further ideas welcome, thanks rog

Clank Noise

Clutch plates do break up, but continue to drive under normsal conditions, ocasionaly a pice of disc will strike the starter dog or an internal part of the bell housing before falling to the bottom.
Pull hand brake hard on put in low ratio first gear and try to drive to test integrity or otherwise of your clutch.

Clutch

I had a broken clutch on my 460 gd. started with some grinding noises and got worse and worse until it woud,nt drive at all.
Machanic said he had never seen a clutch plate in so many pieces before in his 25 years.
I'm sure if I remember correctly a replacement from MB was around 200 pounds.

I use to have a loud metallic bang on my 230, found out it was the anti roll bar sticking, then going all of a sudden under strain which made the loud bang. I found this out when I was off-roading during a lot of axle articulation. The bushes seize so undo bolts and free up with some duck oil.
