Hi All,

Now this intermittent fault is really starting to annoy me, so any pointers please...

I went for 460 to keep electric's simple, yet still haunts me! Anyway, the problem:

1. Turn lights on... wipers (both front and rear) start working. They may continue then stop, or more recently stay on. Then possibly after a while stop, then start etc. Sometime rear might stop and not front.

2. Indicate left, get a wave from front and rear wipers.

Now all on different switches so suspect issue must be somewhere these circuits (lights/wipers (F&R)/indicators) come together. Have checked all earth points, well at least those I could find. So:

QUESTION: Where (or what) should I be checking?

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Stewart

Earths, common problem on W460s,  theres a big bunch on the steering column mounting bracket. It's under panel to the right of the column.  It sounds as if one thing is earthing though something else.

Good luck

Sorry to be so dense - am hoping someone can give me a "dummy's" lesson in electrics. I've seen quite a few suggestions on here that shared earths can cause this problem (and the same problem with other items such as lights, washers etc).

Given that several components can share the same earth point and all these items are permanently earthed how can switching one component on cause a different component to activate? Surely there is no difference whether the two offending components share the same earth point or a different earth point on the vehicle - there is only 1 earth.

Just to let you know you're not alone...

I've experienced similar issues. Some funny, and others, not so much. The latest have been:

- Hit the brakes and the left front running light comes on (on-coming women think I'm winking at them).

- Lights are on, turn the truck off with the key and engine continues running until lights are switched off. Poor mans push button off?

The first went away on it's own and had started after a massive storm, so I agree with the guys above, I think they're all earthing issues. Good luck!

There isn't an earth, it needs sorting.

Re: Why do wipers work when turn lights on?

The earth is making a poor or intermittent connection or worse no connection at all...

So the component that is working is trying to earth thru the other component...

Like a lightning bolt, its trying to find a route to earth with the least resistance...

As all the wires are connected thru the shared earth and maybe the feed from the fuse box and some are also connected to each other thru other components, when the earth goes bad it will try to earth itself by whatever other means possible

Earth issues can be caused be lots of things...

Any paint, dirt or rust etc on the bolt, terminals or body will cause earth issues

Or if the bolt is lose or the wire is broken or breaking

Or any water ingress in the wiring

Or if any replacement wiring is too small

Re: Why do wipers work when turn lights on?

Thanks all for comments. Was hoping somebody might alert me as to where lights/wipers/indicators electrically meet in common. Have tried repeatedly earth behind fuses (multiple connections) but even removing and cleaning these hasn't helped. Well I thought it had at one stage, no wiper action for lights and indicators etc on a number of attempts, but then turned on front spot lights and 'ar$e, bu££er and feck' back to square 1! Got a week in Wales coming up (chances are will need wipers most of the time thankfully!?!) but would like not to have them on incessantly!

Merry Christmas All,

Cheers, Stewart
