Who can do an engine conversion?
As the subject says.... I'm looking to get my almost dear 280ge a new lease of life with a om606 probably but open to other suggestions. I contacted Gordon but his workload is too long considering my vehicle is pretty much undrivable.
I'm based in Scotland if that makes any difference...
Om 606 not easy to find a donor car any more, so many people want those engines, maybe consider BMW options, a few land rover specialists offering M57 engine, 3 litre diesel presume with the electronics, if you can use the BMW gearbox, " only " need to source a propshaft to connect it up, unsure of top gear in BMW box but you would need a really tall top gear , might be worth a callor searching around , depending on budget!
£10,000 plus for a conversion; calculate your likely expenditure in petrol over a 5 year period, balance it against 25mpg and slightly more expensive diesel, I don't think its worth the trouble, but that's only my view, others differ
The 603 diesel from the w463 g-wagen works well as a transplant, it doesn't have the power of a 606 or the phenomenal power of 606a but as the w460 is lighter it works well, certainly keep up with motorway traffic. I think if I were you I'd talk to a 4x4 garage and ask what they've done to Land Rovers, some have had Merc engines put in. What shoves up the price for you is the need for a replacement transmission.
Hi, welcome. Searching the forum is a good idea, the pro and cons of different engines (603/606 with/without turbo) and how difficult it is to convert have been discussed extensively. Converting from petrol to diesel has its complications, you have to find somebody with a track record. If originality is of interest, the turbocharged 603 existed for the 460 (two produced I think), the 606 is a 463 engine. Rebuilding your engine could be an option as well, in the G it is specified as 154 HP and 226 NM @ 4,250 but with a different cylinder head (280SL for example) output is raised to 182 HP and 240 NM @ 4,500.
The 5 cylinder 617 and turbo version 617a is the engine that come with the 460, the 603 is the early 463 motor. It was more widely seen in the pre facelift w124 e class. The 5 cylinder engine is very highly regarded for reliability some have done a million km, but for me its agricultural.
Tho finding a 124 at the right money or a 603 engine will be a challenge ,
They are getting rare and the prices are rising too, this is in Carlisle
What is the thing above the exhaust manifolds?top money...
Don't ask me I have no idea, I have driven a 460 converted to a 603 though and it was hugely better than an original 617, it was sold to a buyer in Malaysia from West Wales
I am also curious as to what that is in the centre above the exhaust manifold ?
Long time since I've seen one but I reckon cruise control actuator motor?

Thats what I was thinking. Electrical control and push rod to throttle. Never seen one.
Its not just the fuel economy, although that is a part of it. The engine isn't running too well, wasn't heating up when i got it, the center of the thermostat had been cut out. I put a new one in and seeemed to be fine but I'm sceptical that it will last very much longer and the WUR is done in by the looks of it. Plus i like the simplicity of Diesel engines
