Whirling noise passenger side

Hello All,

Can anyone suggest sources for a whirling noise that seems to be emitting from the passenger side possibly close to the engine compartment firewall? The noise is faint but noticeable and changes whirl speed with vehicle speed. Doesn't change with engine RPM changes and can't be heard a stand still. Doesn't sound like a gearbox or wheal bearing that I've ever heard. A whirl is the best I can describe the sound but also sounds like a counter. Any help would be most appreciated.

Should your speedo needle vibrate as it reads then my thoughts would a noisy speedo cable which runs from the passenger side foot well then comes up to the back of instrument panel.

Quick test is remove the speedo at the transfer box junction and run the vehicle, doing this will confirm my prognosis.

stab in the dark here.....

Is it your heater motor whirring? I realise that it won't be rpm dependent.....unless the electrics are older and the current to it is increasing with rpms......like I said, most probably not, but just a thought

Thanks for suggestions boys. I'll try to isolate both of those and see if the noise changes.

I also have the nag from the passenger seat and three whiners in the back but the cost of fixing those is far too much! Haha

Re: Whirling noise passenger side

Sorry G-AZ for jumping in on this thread but it reminded me that I also have a noise from the passenger side - maybe to the left of the fuse box  (difficult to be more exact as to location as I am driving at the time and at 80 mph I've found it best to pay close attention to the road ahead in a G Wagon).

My noise kicks in at almost exactly 4,000 RPM and stays until RPM drops below 4,000 when it disappears. Best description I can think of is the noise you might get if you had the passenger side window open a tiny bit (but it isn't).

Could it be something to do with an air intake to the engine or air filter?

Once again apologies. If this is not the done thing and you'd prefer me to start a new thread then just say so.
