Hello all..

I am trying to find the who was selling the full set of g63 shocks (i think), I can remember the add being for £300 for the set. I would like to buy these if the gent or lady is still selling them! They have only just recently disappeared from the Classifieds.

Thank you

Alexander

They were being sold by G-restorations and were mainly G-55 and a few G-65 or G-63(?) . However, I think the price reflects that they are perhaps not so suitable for older, lighter-weight G's. My sister fitted a set of G-55 versions to her 300GD, SWB. They have great handling on smooth motorways, but on anything else, like normal roads, the ride is very harsh. Anyway, if they were that good, why would G55 and G63 owners be removing them in the first place?

Still, for the price they were being offered, it was not a bad deal, considering some ebay sellers in Belgium, asking 2x that figure.

I have been around in circles with this. I found the original G500 shocks (Bilstein) are acceptable, but harder than I would like, and the ones I like best are the original Sachs types. Yes, the car leans a bit in corners, but otherwise the ride is very good and you don't need to slow down for rod humps, like with the Bilsteins.

Re: Where have those g63 (i think) SHOCKS gone from the ...

Thank you Arnie,

I did read the numerous thread that have been created about the springs AMG vs g500 set up etc. I have heard that because im putting these on a swb 460 with a 606 ... the G is already alot lighter than any AMG wagon so it would be extra stiff.

Im looking to upgrade the whole suspension system because of the conversion that is taking place currently with a high hp/torque setup. Also because the current setup is INCREDIBLY SOFT, you can literally press down each corner with your hands with not a great amount of effort.

Looks like its going to be the G500 shocks, as I will mostly be on the road, saying that the potholes in the south west are awful!

any ideas on what springs i should pair that with?

Hi Alex If you search you will see I had a lot of issues with suspension on my 1985 300GD SWB, soft, squatting rear and a tendency to switch from massive under steer to sudden oversteer at quite sedate pace on roundabouts.. And not in a 'fun' way. Even the mechanic who is also a rallye driver thought it was 'interesting' I had 2 sets of OEM Merc and thanks to the always helpful Gav off here finally manged to work out the car hard über soft Merc rear springs for some reason. This was not helped by the fact that also enjoy the odd bit of house remodelling and hard landscaping, so have been known to load the G up with 30+ bags of sand and cement - so blew the rears once. Anyway finally got fed up of the bewildering options and got hold of WestCoast 4x4 and ordered a completed set of springs and shocks from Ironman as the owner in Aus (of Ironman that is) had bought a brand new G500, thought the ride was lacking, and got his guys to create a set. So although for a 463 I got a set and couldn't be happier. Gave the car a slight (35mm ish) lift but sorted the sag out. Ride is firm, but not harsh (subjective that though - it does crash over speed humps, but you can mount a kerb at 20 and hardly notice it) and you can get down country lanes with a grin on your face. It is designed for pretty serious off roading and the springs are progressive - which helps loads with big loads, like Merc originals apparently - but you can no longer do the 'push it by hand and watch it bob' trick. You need to stand on the bumper to make a significant difference. Just a thought and might be worth a look? Best Simon

Thank you Simon, glad you ffound a solution for your G !, what you describe is exactly how my swb 460 handles, very poor and even a 6 year old can push the bumper down and get the thing rocking.

That is the first time i have heard of West coast 4x4, are they any good at what they do ? says they do restorations etc, one day in the near future i would like the 460 just to be offroad based, as she currently is/will be used mostly on the road. Had a look at the ironman 4x4 site and there stuff looks impressive.

I would be interested, defiantly worth a look. Do you suggest i give them a call and describe my situation?

Hi Alex I have only dealt with then -West Coast that is - for the shocks, but they were a very straightforward bunch. The son is running the business started by his dad who is clearly a long time 4x4 guy as he has loads of stuff going back years including some very collectible Willys Jeeps. They mainly deal with landcruisers and are more your living and breathing off roading than in it for tricked out cars and looks. They had some impressive conversions they were working on.. And had just come back from a trip to Morocco in the High Atlas mountains when I dealt with them.. I think ScousG has been to them as well? As for how to go forward, yep give them a call and see what you think of them? They should come up stright away in a google search, but any problems give me a ping! Best Simon

Ill defiantly give them  a call and see what they say. I have been looking at the the Ironman website and i am started to get a bit carried away, I am liking the LED strip lights ;)

Thank you for all your help Simon, I will either be doing this route or going down the G500 suspension route!

Regards

Alexander

Hi Alex No problem. Suspension is a difficult subject on G's as there's so much choice and options, and that's just the aftermarket world of ORC & Raid types... If you get into the OEM options you'll go mad :-)) The attraction for me was the ones from Ironman were made by guys who 'offroad' in Australia and for the owner as an alternative to the spec G500 set up, on his personal G and for about half what a full set of OEM Merc 'Sachs' shocks and springs would have been. If you need anymore info just let me know Simon

Hi Arnie From memory a full set of shocks and springs from Ironman were circa £300 I think.. That's said I have heard a lot of good things about Sachs shocks - Merc tend to know what they are doing :-). However getting the springs sorted - something like 8 variants with further 'stripe' categories and a tendency to snap - tipped me down the 'everything from one supplier' route. All the best Simon.

I was selling a set of 4 shocks in the classified section and the notice has now expired. They were from a g55 amg. MB Bilstein.

I found them a little firm. They improved the handling though. Let me know if you are interested, I was asking £300 but you can make an offer as I don't want them. I fitted Sachs and they are softer but the handling is less precise.
