The Buying Advice Part 1 is really useful and says the 230E is one of the less robust engine's whilst the 300E (M103) is one of the more robust. Question is: what's actually considered high mileage for a 300E? Obviously regular oil changes are key to any engine's longevity, I had a Volvo that I took up to 268,000 motorway miles before the mpg started to drop noticeably showing it was starting to wear out a bit.

Re: What's considered high mileage?

I had a 1988 230TE which I purchased with 60,000miles on the clock after 12 years it had covered 288,000. Same engine and gearbox without any major repairs. When I sold the car there was nothing wrong with the drive train and I am sure it would have covered many more miles.  I changed the engine oil every 6,000 miles and the gearbox (auto) oil every 12,000.

I think the 230 is a great engine and well matched  to the G.

Howard - I had an almost exact ditto 230TE.  The front wings on the other hand ... but the guy who bought it put new wings on and did another 50,000 before he then sold it.  I bet it is still going somewhere!

Both my G (M103) and my SL are around the 80 to 90K. Rightly or wrongly I think they're both low mileage.

My Lexus is a little higher at around 140K. Nothing for a decent V8 and runs sweet as a nut.

Re: What's considered high mileage?

both engines are chain drive which is easier maintenance than having to change cambelts every 30k or so, I have two 300e petrol engines one in the w463 and another in a w124 saloon, the G-wagen has had a head gasket and head overhaul at 150k but once done this seems to be capable of a least that again with standard care. The w124 has slightly fewer miles and is driven harder but as yet no head gasket issues. The 230 has a good reputation who ever wrote or told you its fragile is missinformed

12K-15K is considered average mileage in the UK.

Mine has now done 190K and is going strong. OK standard parts will begin to ware, but keep on top of the maintenance and your G should give you years (and miles) of smiles!

Gunter Holfdorf did well over 500,000 miles. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18910560

I think Richard Wells's G has around 4 or 500000.  Just run in.

Re: What's considered high mileage?

Wear is highly dependant on use and servicing being carried out as per schedule.. My valves were checked recently .. And the specialist with 32 years of experience of Mercedes engines was astonished at the lack of wear on my cam lobes ( 103,000miles) Down to regular servicing ... Although my rattley tappers are now near silent thanks to (now) correct adjustment.. I've seen taxi engines at 500,000 miles.. Running perfectly.. And 80,000 with carastauphic engine failure.. It's always going to be a bit of a lottery.. I looked at a G with 270000 miles on it 463 300swb Engine sweet as a peach.. But the interior was rotten .. As was the body.. Look at the whole package.. Engine/ body/ gearbox.. Interior.. And particulary the paperwork.. That will give an indication as to the servicing and care the engine has had.. Low milage is no guarentee .. If it been neglected.. These are tough engines ( my specialist says) so should be good for 200-300 000 miles without too much fuss... They were designed origionally as military vehicles .. So were built to last Just my thoughts

I think Kevin (Stuttgart) 460 300GD (Big White) has 500k plus

Eddie (Needamerc) 460 300GD (Big Green) has 800k plus
