Was it a boat or a G in the Rhine
On holiday celebrating the New Year in Rhudesheim, Germany. My wife and I were driving along the Rhine enjoying the views when she said to me that a yellow Land Rover had just driven into the river and was sailing along. Stopping to look I quickly saw it was not a Land Rover(which would probably have sunk because of leaks) but it looked like a G. It had shipping port and starboard lights and a dinghy on the roof. I sent pics to Jesus to see if he knew anything about this vehicle. No reply to date. I wish I knew how to put pics on here. Was the vehicle owned by the river authority? I would like to find out more info.
I know the vehicle you talk about, I saw it once at the international off road show in Munich about 7 years ago.

Do you mean... was it amphibian or did it just got stuck in the middle of the river???
Two and a half tons of G floating - come on, do you think I came up the banana in a clyde boat (deliberate mistake!)!

Sounds like an AmphiRanger to me. Salt water resistant hull, independent suspension, G-Wagen bits and pieces including transfer case (I think). Various engines. The one I drove down the Thames (many moons ago) and around the streets of Richmond had a Ford V6. Fabulous machine: rolled like a barge on the road, quite good off it (front and rear diff locks) and the brakes didn't work when afloat!
Had an electrically retracted propeller for propulsion in the water. Built by a company in Germany (name escapes me at the moment) for the oil industry, originally to meet a need for pipline inspection in waterlogged terrain. It saved them and equipment constantly having to transfer from vehicles to boats and back again, over and over as they followed the course of the pipeline, or so the story went. Two attempts were made to market it in UK. The first was amateurish, and the second set the unit price too high, i.e. it was cheaper to hire a helicopter for a couple of weeks.
I still have a brochure somewhere.......after all that, I hope it was an AphiRanger!
If you stick "Amphibious Vehicles" into Google.com, you'll find them, amongst a great many other vehicles of that ilk.
