Just came across this VIN decoder site.

It worked for my G. Hope it might be of use to some others.

Re: Want to know what your VIN means

Check this link:

http://www.dmv.org/vehicle-history/vin-decoder.php

The G-Wagen chassis number reads 'WDB'; W = West Germany, 'DB' = Daimler Benz.

The following letters describe model number, distinguish between RHD/LHD, manual/automatic transmission, and lastly vehicle identification number which is unique to each vehicle. The order of my list is not in order but gives you the gist of these numbers. Anyway check the link above - its gives you a precise explanation.

Re: Want to know what your VIN means

I just tried that one but got "Sorry but the VIN number you entered is incorrect" message.

It appears to be only for cars registered in North America.
