Hi all,

I have a W463 with rear drums and want to convert to disc. I have read the threads on here saying a sprinter rear axle will fit but does anyone know which year and has anyone completed this fit?

any other suggestions would be welcomed.

I know the drums are ok but they look awful and it there were that good they would still use them on the new G's!

thanks.

Not that simple unfortunately, the axle from a sprinter is wider and the diff is central, they do share common parts but the critical ones aren't interchangeable. also if you want to swap to a G axle,  the disk braked W463 axles are wider than the drum variants

My advice,  it aint broke, don't try n fix it

Drums work much better off road and if you paint their exterior dont look bad.

Did you do any good with your own conversion?

The kit from ORC.de looks OK but very expensive.

you may lose ABS in the conversion and that's an MOT fail

Drums when properly setup and maintained are more than adequate.

You mention why they don't fit them to new G Wagen's. Fashion and cost really.

I really don't see the point of such a conversion.

I've only done the one conversion which is under my G, we're just doing a second one as we speak. This one will use front disks which are a little bigger than the 463 tears that we used on the first one, this should give a better braking balance.

I'm not ready to roll this out until I'm completely happy with it.  The main reason for looking into doing  this is because all the parts to renew a drum brake set up was more expensive.

I take on board the comments about the efficiency of the drums but I have done an engine swap and the G has a fair bit more poke now sow a brake upgrade would seem the next logical step.

it does but the G's inability to go around corners quickly would worry me more

I agree there and nothing you do will make it a sports car (and we don't want that anyway) but better brakes can only be a good thing.
