Fit a real one i.e. a steel van/Wolf/Granny one which is a 5 speed version of the 4 speed G gearbox. The OEM 5 speed Getrag is questionable even when new (but the shift change is nicer).

I did a write up on how to do it over in USA.. mind it was not just a bolt in job but at least the gearbox is stronger = http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=18318&start=1

Alternative is fitting a 190 saloon gearbox with the wrong ratios at the bottom end.. far more available and same on outside; see here; Fitting a 190 2.6 Gearbox to a 280GE  http://www.gwagen.de/html/english/gearbox.html

Otherwise .. rebuild yours or keep hunting..

I have one, but which model specifically do you need? I have a 717.436 IIRC
