The visous coupling on my 300 GD has seized solid, and i thought surely can't be too expensive, how wrong i was. Mercedes quoted me today £300 + vat :o
Does anyone here know where i can buy one cheaper or maybe info on fitting an electric fan?
Many thanks

You are right.... it is listed as € 402.91 + VAT in Germany, so it's not surprising.

I would try EUROCARPARTS:

Just bin it and fit a Kenlow.
Or if you are up to it go to the local scrappy and get a suitable electric fan off a scrap car.

Can you give more details? If only for the savings on fuel this is a good mod. Cheers,

Well, the benefits are clear.... I meant what model, where to get it from and tips for fitting it..... specially to be able to compare it with the Kenlowe that Greeney has fitted to his car.

Cheers

Re: Viscous coupling

Could you please furnish your Chassis No: and, or your Registeration No:; I have any enquiry on going for you on this topic.  This is for an alternative supplier for the viscous coupling.  If you could manage the engine number, that would be nicer still, viscous couplings for you model are engine number related.

Thinking about this, was your fan freely turning before?  My experience of failed viscous couplings are that, they usually fail in the 'fan free' position, hence the tab to permanently lock the fan for cooling in an emergency.  They could fail in a locked position, I suppose, but I feel this would be extremely rare.

cheers,

Re: Viscous coupling

Hi Rakesh,

Thanks for your help on this, the fan does run freely however I do not see any locking tabs may be a non OEM clutch ?

Below are the engine/chassis details you requested :

Engine : 103987 22 001482
Chassis : 463 2272 707 6343

I removed the thermostat yesterday and noticed a drop in cruising temp. from 95/100 c to 80c however it still climbed towards 120c when I got stuck in traffic.

Regards,

Sam

Re: Viscous coupling

Hello Sam,

As temporary measure, you can set your heating to hot and heater fan on to increase the surface area for heat to dissipate, this will help in reducing the coolant temperatue a little, you will need to turn down your windows though.
Secondly, in anticipated long and slow moving traffic, switch off the engine.

Thanks for you vehicle details, looking into viscous coupling supply.

Rakesh.
