Unofficial Figures (MPH/MPG)
A few days ago I inadvertently tried to ‘Semi-Hijack’ a thread to get a reflection from members of what type of performance and consumption was available from the many differing guises of G Wagen!
My daily drive is a 2011 E250 CDI Estate 'Blue Ray Dolby Efficient' which I use to crunch out over a 1000 miles a week which returns on average 50-60 to the gallon cruising between 60-85 all day.
Sometimes I yearn to take my latest G300 LWB auto ‘The Green Goddess’ whom I know would happily sit at 85 mph (She got a speed ticket last week) all day but give returns of probably no more than 16 to the gallon. (I hear the cry of Spider1V saying….’You might as well have a V8! ')
The above type of return means I cannot fully enjoy the benefits of my G on some boring work jaunts but instead of just using it for ‘High Days and Holidays’. I want to be able to cruise at 60-85 but also see a little better return than 16 MPG. I am sure there are millions of threads and interpretations on this and appreciate that the ‘calibration’ of some figures may be up for a little jiggery pokey!
I have read all the threads and tested all of the prototypes and the jury has decided that my guilty pleasure would be a 662 with 5 speed auto
It would be great from a personal point to see what the view point/estimates on what is achievable for all the potential engine variants displayed in a table or matrix!
The table is not exhaustive and feel free to add any comment of other variations as I did think about a gas conversion on the G300 but was told that the K-tronic system meant that this simply was a no goer. Please excluding used chip fat and hydro power conversion that I know Dr Spider and Mercfan previously posted.
I am not greedy and am sure like all G Wagen owners realise that a 2.5 ton square box is not that aerodynamic and 40 mpg is not attainable.....unless of course you know different!
However, 30-35 would be financially worth the pleasure of sitting in ‘Pullman Seats’ gliding down the motorways.
Lots of different translations I'm sure...but never the less would be a interesting read if anybody has time to complete.
The table attached is for adaption/population if anybody has the inclination/knowledge.
Thanks
Tim
W460/OM606 mechanical fuel injection 23-25 around town 18-20 towing 3.5 tonnes. This is what I get day in day out, not the best figure I've ever had and with no hot air. ;)
probably about the same maybe very slightly better on a run. But I usually get bored and my foot drifts downwards, I didn't do the conversion for the economy, if anything it does about 2 mpg less than the old 617 but it's now a pleasure to drive and overtaking is anytime not a pipe dream!!!
Probably get much the same from a standard G300TD.
Can get down to high 14's, but at speeds well above 85.
Towed a loaded military spec G once, well overloaded, not sure what MPG I got, but I seem to remember it was reasonable cause I was going so slow. :)
Thanks Gordon I've seen your glowing turbo....
What on a run unladen cruising at 65?
All of this is so much better than my G300 petrol!
I don't want the big petrol v diesel debate just sensible returns to enjoy my G more on the road.
Even contemplating a G2.3 to hack around in as I believe they are more than capable of a pretty good return and with petrol 10p a gallon cheaper..
Just a good ole honest viewpoint.

230 every day :-)
Tim, how accurate is your speedo compared with Sat Nav? Mine a good 10% down on reality.
All those flat roads around Norfolk you could run taller wheels, gear it up abit. Can't see any proper 4wd doing 35mpg and 85mph
At those speeds (48 – 62 mph) my G (OM642, seven speed automatic) probably achieves 30mpg but only once the engine is warm (and that takes a few miles). But we are talking ideal fuel-efficiency conditions: the car selects 7th gear at around 45 mph and the non-existent aero-dynamic qualities become relevant above 55mph. My display shows a long-term average of 23.5 mpg.
23.5 is better then the long term average from my Sprinter with the same engine. Throttle is on the right!
A few years ago, (in the G ) when there were mile & miles of road works on the M1, I reset the the MPG display at the beginning of the 50MPH limits, think it achieved around 30MPG. Soon went down to 19MPG when limit was lifted .
my LWB G with the 617n/a 4 speed alto ALWAYS DID 21mpg
on a run in town the same
changed the engine to a 617a (intercooler) still alto now 24 mpg
on a run and in town
i do drive max RPM 3250 aprox 60mph
"23.5 is better then the long term average from my Sprinter with the same engine. Throttle is on the right!"
.. avoid heavy braking before corners and you will achieve 23.5 as well... seems to be more a questions of regional traffic conditions.
W460 300GD LWB Garret turbo, 33" tyres, 4 speed manual, steady 55mph, 22mpg. When towing drops to 18mpg.
W460 280GE LWB 4 speed auto, 18/15/12mpg depending on right foot.
W463 G55K 13/14mpg all the time, no matter how I drive it, even heavy towing, always 13/14mpg.
Thanks Gordon I've seen your glowing turbo....
