Unknown parts and hoses?
Hello.
I am renovating my g class w463 1993 model. I had a guy changing the back corners of the body and in doing so he cut two hoses coming from a black box that is bolted under the back righ fender. The hoses run into the backlight casing and from there to the left backlight casing. I do not know where it goes from there.
The car is running great but does anyone know what this part does or what those hoses do?
I have attached two pictures that show this better. First one shows the location in the car. The second one is a close up.
On a diesel 460 there are vent hoses for a fuel vent solenoids located inside above that wheel. So presume that is what they are for. See attached.
My money would also be on fuel tank beater hoses.
The 'black box' is the carbon canister. The hose are to control petrol fumes and vapour coming from the tank. The fumes are passed through the carbon canister and then fed back to the engine intake manifold. The hoses should be (must be) replaced and reconnected.
The fuel pump is not connected to the carbon canister. There is an intake from the tank breather lines, a vent line to atmosphere through a control valve and a return to the engine intake manifold.
Have sent you a PM with a link to the service manual which has all the details you need.
I will see if I have some pictures. But the hoses and connections onto the canister are of different diameters, so if you have some hose remnants left, you should be able to match them up.
The images seem to be rotated 90 degrees. Here are links to the correct ones:
