Hello.

I am renovating my g class w463 1993 model. I had a guy changing the back corners of the body and in doing so he cut two hoses coming from a black box that is bolted under the back righ fender. The hoses run into the backlight casing and from there to the left backlight casing. I do not know where it goes from there.

The car is running great but does anyone know what this part does or what those hoses do?

I have attached two pictures that show this better. First one shows the location in the car. The second one is a close up.

Re: Unknown parts and hoses?

The images seem to be rotated 90 degrees. Here are links to the correct ones:

All help is much appreciated.

On a diesel 460 there are vent hoses for a fuel vent solenoids located inside above that wheel. So presume that is what they are for. See attached.

My money would also be on fuel tank beater hoses.

The 'black box' is the carbon canister. The hose are to control petrol fumes and vapour coming from the tank. The fumes are passed through the carbon canister and then fed back to the engine intake manifold. The hoses should be (must be) replaced and reconnected.

Re: Unknown parts and hoses?

Thank you for the quick reply. Much appreciated.

Some follow up questions. I noticed that there are three hoses not two coming out of the carbon canister box.

I figured that two of them are connected to pipes that go into the body of the car.

There is one more that I am unsure where it goes. I suspect it connects to the fuel pump intake pipe? Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Unknown parts and hoses?

The fuel pump is not connected to the carbon canister. There is an intake from the tank breather lines, a vent line to atmosphere through a control valve and a return to the engine intake manifold.

Have sent you a PM with a link to the service manual which has all the details you need.

Great to get the manual.

But, it does not contain detailed enough information. So if anyone can give me some info on what hose goes where :)

Re: Unknown parts and hoses?

I will see if I have some pictures. But the hoses and connections onto the canister are of different diameters, so if you have some hose remnants left, you should be able to match them up.

Re: Unknown parts and hoses?

These are the images I found in the manual.

They are a bit cryptic.

But yes there are three hoses coming out of the carbon canister. I think i have located two of them who have the same diameter. But the problem is with the third and the longest one, slightly smaller diameter on that one.
