What is the absolute top speed of a 6 cylinder SWB Diesel?

The 300GDS has a quoted top speed of 84mph. Though that depends on the slope of the hill and the wind!

But if you really are concerned about top speed, why drive a G in the first place?

Why the need for speed

I need the speed because I do alot of long distance journeys [3500 miles at a time] on the continent and i cruise at 100. I do Sicily non stop and if I were to do 70 -80 It would end up a 2 day journey and with 2 kids that becomes hard on them. The only problem is 3500 miles in a petrol gets expensive, especially as diesel is far cheeper over there the Petrol.
I like speed and I used my 928 for that[until I sold it a few weeks back] but I use my G as my daily rather than buy an M class,X5 or any of the other school run rides, simply because I love it,The positive clunck of the door closing,The character of its mild ugliness,Its robustness,The space inside,The secure feeling I get when Im in it,The positiveness of the Auto gbox, The performance of those diff locks when your in a situation,The feeling I got when MyStandard Lwb G was the only 4x4 to make a tricky climb at Bagshot 6 years ago,They closed it to all others bar some small block chevy powered special and my G ,wife and 2 children. The feeling I got when it started to slow half way up and I just gently forced the accelerator down until the auto kicked down into 1st and I completed the climb even with ruts 1 m deep and only 2 corners touching the ground at any one time! There were many modified landrovers winched out of that run that day.I still miss my 83 with plastic carpets that I could put the hose inside rather than the hoover.

That is probably why many G owners have two or more.It is why I have 2 or more G's rather than 2 or more Porsches..... It certainly isnt because of the speed. :D

If you want to cruise at 100 mph with a G-Wagen, I am not so sure that turboing a 463 300 GD would be a good idea. The car would be able to achieve that speed, but only "flat out" and that would probably kill the engine in no time.

FYI the max speed of the G300 DT and the G270CDI are 164 and 160 Km/h respectively (roughly 100 mph) and they are NOT supposed to maintain this kind of speed for a long time. A cruising speed of 100 mph is rather more achievable with the 113 mph top speed G400CDI, but for this, you must be prepared to spend big bucks.

In any event, even the most efficient diesel G-Wagen would be consuming at least 18 litres/100 Km (15 mpg) of diesel at 160 Km/h.

If you want motorway performance with reasonable fuel economy perhaps your best bet is to buy a good G320 (109 mph top) and convert it to LPG. I know that LPG is widespread in Italy but I am not sure about the other countries that you plan to cross.....

I don't know about G Wagens,, but i would have thought that the aerodynamics limit your max speed before the engine is flat out,, by adding a turbo,, the engine has more power to get closer to max revs,,,and therefore a few more mph...but,, i don't think your doing the engine any favours... The 300DT's and 270CDI both have a relatively high top gear,,, and i would assume their quoted top speed is achieved way below max engine revs...
I've had more Merc vans then i care to remember,, and all barring the Sprinters,,all have been driven flat out,, mile after mile... The 2.9litre Sprinter won't go any where near max revs in top gear,,, (long downhills excepted),,,, not a bad thing really,, cause it would be doing well over 120mph..

Curiously enough Andy I also have a 928 and feel the same about that, clunking doors, total competence for the job (cross-continent touring) but you're right - there has to be at least two lockable diffs in everyones garage!.

AndyC asked

"Roy What 928 do you have?"

We have an 88 928S4, Black on black, nicely run in at 154K miles.

We've had it about 3 years, I bought it to commute to Southampton for a long term contract - perfect long-legged tourer. 320 bhp, 165 mph - but no good offroad at all.

My Mrs is currently using it as her daily driver as she does least mileage, I smoke around in a '95 Citroen XM 2.5 Turbo Diesel. More carrying capability than a Range Rover, cruises at 90 mph and 32 mpg. - but no good off road at all. again.

Horses for courses then Alan!

the 928 is a very forgotten carand underated.Once you get used to the mirrors and width they are so easy to drive.
My wife Jane drove ours for nearly 3 years until the waterpump went.Even with a manual , the clutch was as light as afeather. Great car...miss mine dearly. It was gp white with mulbury interior, wide track option and a Strosec gbox and multiplate clutch.........apparantly.
Ill start to look for another in january but it must be a manual!
