Hi All

Anyone did try to use the timing light for tuning your classic G regularly? Do you have any recommended timing light device? I driving 280GE 1986. :)

Cheers,

Eric

I got a used Snap-on timing strobe with rpm readout on Ebay. Its bright enough for daylight use -  the cheap ones are pretty dim and therefore useless.  Also I set to 34 btdc instead of 30 - seems smoother and seems ok with UK fuel - no pinking. Check the condition of the distributor locking allen bolt as they mess up pretty easily - maybe get a spare!

Generally speaking if your ignition timing has been set correctly, these do not require any further attention theoretically unless the distributor has been tampered with. Service schedules do require checking at every 12,000 miles but in my opinion this is excessive as the tranistorised ignition there is no wear adjustments to speak of. In my life of checking these very rarely any adjustments were required.

The distributor having no contact set of points which used to wear out required checking and adjusting on service schedules or replacement of new contact points. The only time you need check timing is if you have any performance issues as although not having points, the rotor arm shaft could wear and affect ignition timing which would affect performance.

So in balance, you need to consider the cost verses usage of this tool. It is not cost effective.

I have not looked into the model you have given but should you still be interested, my choice would be one with timing offset. This allows you to check timing at other speeds than the mandatory idle speed check. Checking the timing at 3,400 rpm with the vacuum off can give indication if there is issue with the spring and weights used to control timing advance or retardation housed in the distributor its self.

I will try to look into this latter.
