synchro rings?
My car has been popping out of third gear quite frequently lately. This started happening after the garage accidentally put the gear lever on backwards. They have since rectified this but it is still popping out of third gear.
They said they believe it is the synchro rings which need replacing and that the cost do so is £1100+vat.
What do you think?
Hi Maxwell
This could be the case but in my experience it is usually the torque setting of the selector rod, the bolt that holds the selector link to the selector fork needs to be torque set this can be done with the g/box in situ you will need to check the torque setting's from the technical data i cant remember them of hand but if you cant get them mail me and i will get them for you. If this does not resolve the problem then it prob is the synchros but it is worth trying first

cant be sure of that they somtimes need reseting just because they have worked loose

On a lighter note did you get a nice gear lever knob? If so where from?
Thanks MRKBENZ, I'll take a look at that. It certainly sounds a lot cheaper...
I need to point out that the whole reason the gear lever was turned around is I wanted to change the boot but the gear knob was frozen onto the stick. Do you think that the torque setting could of been knocked out by the garage trying to either unscrew the knob or in the end removing it?
Thanks
