Sunroof Closing (or not)

Very wet driver's seat a few days ago alerted me to the fact that the sunroof had not closed properly the previous day.

Have tried operating a few times and problem appears to be only when using the "tilt" function. Sunroof opens properly but often when closing it appears to be closed from inside the car but when looking outside, the rear of the sunroof is not fully in the down position. I can push down (not in a hard way) on the rear edge and the sunroof goes down and stays down or I can use the switch to slide the roof open and then slide it closed and it closes fully.

Anyone any suggestions?

Is it a lubrication problem?

What is supposed to make the sunroof know that it is closed so that the motor stops?

I did recently fit a new sunroof seal but that all looks to be in good shape and located properly.

As I cannot remember fully and no longer with EPC access I know for sure the mounting screws holding the frame work and the sunroof has become loose hence the roof does not follow the frame which would be seemingly closing.

You will need to take the sunroof's cover off to see the screws to re-tighten again.

the G-wagen sun roof is from a w126 so if you can access that you have the layout

Re: Sunroof Closing (or not)

I had a similar problem with my sunroof which was caused by a lack of lubrication which made the mechanism very stiff.

Be careful pressing down on the roof to close it because the angular lift arms are not very strong and are easy to break or move out of alignment.

To gain proper access to the mechanism you would need to remove the inner trim panel and then remove the metal roof panel from the rails (several videos on youtube show you how to do this).

I took the easy option and did not do any disassembly because my mechanism did not appear to be broken just stiff. I used the straw attachment on the WD40 can and gave the runners and tilt mechanism a liberal spray in all the places I could reach without any disassembly. I then opened and closed the sunroof several times and re-applied the WD40 until everything operated smoothly.

You may want to try this method first before you start stripping the sunroof which is a bit on the tricky side.
