Suggestions on how best to repair corrosion in rear shock towers W460 LWB 1982
Can somone suggest the best way to sort this rear shock tower corrosion?
Both sides, rear shock tower. Is this something a good welder can fill?
1982 W460 is driven about 600 miles per year, never over 45 mph (70 km/h).
By the time a good welder finished cleaning them off you might find there's not a lot of good metal left.
The "best" way would be to get new bits from MB and have them welded in.
Are the spring mounts also on the way out?
Only 600 miles per year so I understand why you might not want to spend the money.
Bear in mind that I'm not a mechanic - but I have had both shock and spring mounts replaced in the past.
Replace
The shock mounts are not too expensive
Spring mounts a bit more!
Its a standard fix. The replacement MB parts are not expensive.
Remove the old and grind down to weld on new.
If petrol, shield the tank, but its not that close.
Its a garage/mechanic job for me.
Nearside corrodes first and more due to roadside salt, but likely both are needed.
Tho you need someone who is a good welder, and sometimes helps to lift the body , raised mine by a few inches to help access , then the issue if keeping the rust at bay....
You can get at them with a smaller mig gun
Nice repair
I've ordered replacement parts from Latvia. I'll begin the wonderful weekend job of cutting with a grinder then driving shockless to town to my welder who is top rated but fussy.
A lot of good parts from from suppliers in Latvia. But there have also been no shows. Genuine OEM from MB is really not expensive for these parts (though they often ship from Germany too).
