Do we have a register of stolen G's in the club and/or forum?

VIN numbers and Engine numbers where possible.

Reason why, is that recently some have appeared from virtually "nowhere".

And then today had a call from a gent who unceremoniously stated in broken English: "This G class (460 300GD) is immaculate. Ten years ago it was taken from the UK to Bulgaria for full restoration and to make 100% Brabus copy."

When prompted came "G-class now worth more in UK than in Bulgaria that why we bring it back to UK"

Apparently still right hand drive.

He wants cash on arrival at Dover and head straight back.

Number withheld. Big alarm bells ringing. Where on earth did he even get my number? But I did sell my 7.5 ton truck to a Bulgarian chap years ago who saw that I had a few G's. Maybe there was a connection. Either way, the asking price is not absurd and it could be perfectly genuine and innocent.

Armed with a handy list of (stolen G) VIN numbers, we can all tread with caution.

Would be even better if we somehow can fathom a list that would include ones stolen in other countries, but that would probably be asking too much.

Footnote: I have nothing against Bulgarians - some of the best mechanics I have ever encountered were Bulgarian. My Bulgarian customer of a few years ago was the most genuine and honest bloke you could ever meet. Genuinely lovely people. You find scum in every nation. The above incident has no reflection whatsoever on the country and it's people.

Re: STOLEN REGISTER?

about a year ago there was a 463 300 ge lwb for sale in bristol (private sale) on a well known car sale site.

nothing unusual about that, until you find out it is a 1984 280 ge 460 lwb on its chassis number and registration, it had come from another part of the uk / gav saw the pictures i sent him /

this car has been withdrawn from sale and has disappeared from sight -where is it?? who owns it ?? more importantly whose was it?? ie. it is stolen and ringed and it had passed through the hands of a g wagen 'broker' and he knew its history .

any old g can donate its body i.d.tag and its chunk of chassis and if they are really doing a number also its 'hidden' number

this is then taken away and used to ring a stolen g in another part of the world /expensive vehicles = tempting for a ringer...

 MB specialist

Very flattering Gav, but not quite. I have/had a few and enjoy them. Even working on them is a pleasure compared to other stuff which I also have/had at times. So I half-way understand them, but I generally don't work on other people's cars.

@Axel

Suppose that's when this forum really comes into its own.

Still there's a huge number of vehicles been sold on with just a reg plate and tax disc change, like your example surprise

Re: STOLEN REGISTER?

this pile of stolen rubbish had a plate welded over the chassis leg hiding the number and the 460's i.d. tag riveted onto the heater inlet - oh -and it was £10k  and it was known to be nicked by the g wagen 'dealer' and the 'owner'

 it remains at large..

stolen g's -there are loads of them

Re: STOLEN REGISTER?

It's exactly the same in the Land Rover world.... they're forever getting stolen, ringed, broken up etc.

not that I like hearing about it, but it's almost reassuring that "other" marques of car also get stolen/ringed etc.

I think it must be more prolific with vehicles like defenders/G's/Trucks etc, which are quite modular in construction, and thus dead easy to swap parts over.

Re: STOLEN REGISTER?

Mercfan raises a good issue here, I am for it. My questions is who is to be nominated to do this work?

Any paid up member wishing to purchase a G-Wagen can ask us provided they furnish the vehicle Registration and Chassis number. We will try to assist as much as we can.

Alternatively, my suggestion is any one can do their own checks at a small fee. Check these sites out.

Re: STOLEN REGISTER?

Thanks for the links Rakesh and good comments. HPi check is always worth doing, BUT: Couple of years ago I bought a Passat TDI which wasn't running right and needed work. Did all the checks. All clear. Paperwork sent off to DVLA. 4 Weeks later police were at my door handcuffs to the ready. Car was stolen. Apparently it takes time for HPi and others' systems to be updated. Fortunately I had a copy of my checks at the time available. But the car still had to go back to the original owner. Took it back there myself and got my money back. Turns out he thought it be a good idea to get a copy logbook beforehand, keep one key, report it stolen AND selling it to me surprise

So I didn't loose anything and the police were happy with my side of things, but it was still hassle. Fortunately I had a lot of work on at the time, so hadn't spent anything on it at that stage.

He got put away for 9 months for fraud.

Plonker. How thick can you be???

Either way, the stolen register doesn't need to be "work". Just a sticky in the buying advice section where people can post the reg and vin numbers of their vehicles that got stolen. Simples.
