Re: Steering Arm

Try getting someone to place a sledgehammer hammer against one side whilst you smack hell out of it with a 4lb lump hammer the other side.

Failing that try taking it to a commercial workshop (wagons or buses) and they will get it off.

Re: Steering Arm

I tried the sledgehammer method but it never budged the taper so I borrowed a good quality two leg puller this got it off, I dug the old seal out and cleaned up the shaft using the old seal to protect the new seal and tapped the new seal in position.

Job done with no more leaks

The most brutal I've ever been with a car is my daughter's 206DTurbo. A fast (ish) fun car but it literally doesn't have a single straight panel on it, even the roof has foot prints on it (don't ask).

Anyway the rear trailing arm bearings fail. Choices, scrap it, get a second hand rear axle, or for a mere £12 replace the bearing.

Should have paid someone to do it.............it took a 7lb sledgehammer swung as hard as I could, and I'm not small, for maybe 30 minutes to get the arm off.

I don't think I'll bother next time. To be fare she did help and put up with the language.

Re: Steering Arm

PlusGas soaking for a week

5t hydraulic puller at max capacity

4lb club hammer in one hand held against arm.. 32oz Engineering hammer striking the other side as hard as I could.

When the arm came off it put a fair dent in the concrete floor..

Re: Steering Arm

In answer to your question I believe that the steering arm (pitman) is sold separately to the steering box so you should be able to get one from your MB dealer, I don't know the part number.

Have you tried one of these with an impact wrench...

Re: Steering Arm

Undo the nut and put it back on leaving a 4/5 mm gap this will protect the thread if you strike the side of the arm to shock it off and stops the arm with the puller catapulting off.

its a good ideal to mark the arm position with some paint of similar so you know the correct position when you are reassembling.
