I have a 1999 G 500, which is having intermittent start up problems, it's starts sometimes but at other times its like i forgotten to put my foot on the brake, any idea why this may be happening?

Thanks in advance

Freddie

Re: Starting Problems

Hi Freddie

Could do with PM with VIN / REG to help more

M113 occasionally suffer with Crank Position Sensor issues that could show like that

Really need some more info on the car to guide better

I don't follow the 'like I've forgotten to put my foot on the brake' part? Do you mean there is no cranking ? Or the starter engages, engine turns and no firing(ignition)? It could also be fuel supply(starvation) which could be pump or blocked lines or filter.

Re: Starting Problems

OK I will look and come up with some options as I am sure others will also

Out of interest does it get used much or stand for periods of time?

Does it do the non start everytime or just occasionally?

When it does it next will you move the shifter from "P" to "N" and see if it goes in Neutral

Hi Gav

Out of interest does it get used much or stand for periods of time? Yes it often stands for long periods

Does it do the non start everytime or just occasionally? The problem started last week and the G is still starting

When it does it next will you move the shifter from "P" to "N" and see if it goes in Neutral Will do

Thanks Freddie

Re: Starting Problems

the issue most likely is the key, if it does not talk to the car then the car does not start; do you still have the second key? if you have an infrared key (and the model year points that way) then this is a tricky issue as Mercedes does not have replacement keys any more but in the past these have become available from time to time; there are specialists who are able to get these keys working again.

Re: Starting Problems

Maybe but electronics either work or they don't.

I was thinking its related to the micro-scwich detecting if you are in Park or Neutral. If it thinks you are in Drive, no start. Happened to me in a 460 automatic. Give that switch an overhaul. In a 460 its just under the gate-guide.  Not sure on a 463.

Re: Starting Problems

I had that issue on a R129 in Germany, it got progressively worse. If the key does not work properly the immobilizer remains active.

Re: Starting Problems

According to the MB tech it's the ignition switch, lets see a new one has been ordered.

Thanks

Re: Starting Problems

If that is the case you usually don't get any dash lights come on for a non start but normal when it does... have you seen this?

Re: Starting Problems

The lights all act as normal on non start up,  the tech is saying now it may possible be the starter motor as well.

Re: Starting Problems

try the second key, if this causes no problems you know the issue is the first key.

Re: Starting Problems

Theo has a good shout there

Very doubtful starter motor

More chance the inhibitor switch that stops you starting it in gear .. sometimes called the starter lock out switch

Located on side of auto box from memory

Re: Starting Problems
Before going mad with starter motor, double check the earth strap from the motor to the car body. Both ends but mainly the body attachment. I had a corroded connection once which gave similar symptoms. Undoing, cleaning and reconnecting solved it all.
