My starter has developed an intermittent problem in that it will not turn over. I can hear the solenoid clicking in and out but the motor will not turn. It seems to be temperature related in that it will work OK from cold but when warm it may take 10 to 20 attempts before the starter will turn. :(
Have cleaned the connections on the exterior of the starter but this had no effect. The battery is good. However when it first developed I did suspect the battery and used jump leads which helped.
Suggests high resistance contacts in the starter?
Any ideas? I have avoided taking the starter off as it looks a pig to get at the top retaining bolt.
If I do need to remove the starter anyone done this?

Thanks,
Russ

Thanks for the reply Terry, was wondering if there was anyone out there!!
I will remove the starter in the next week or so. Depending on what i find I may take you up on the offer of the second hand motor.

Cheers,
Russ

try a hammer first...

russ,

before you rip out the starter engine, try the good old hammer-methode first. you said the problem occurs when it is warm, so a good bash with a hammer on that thing might help.

btw: this is no joke. don't know what/why it works, but it does.

Thanks Terry, you were spot on.

Finally got around to taking the starter off. The 10mm bolts were tight, 3-foot extension bar (1 broken socket) and 16 stone only just managed to move them! Apart from that not as bad as I thought. It was the high current contacts within the solenoid.

The solenoid was sealed for life so couldn’t replace the contacts. A new Bosch one was only 10 pounds though.

Anyway problem solved, thanks for the help.

Starter Motor

If my memory serves me the solenoid on a 280 is under the motor and is susceptible to water ingress. before I refit them I drill the housing to let water drain out, put a small split pin in the hole and splay the ends, vibration spins the pin and keeps the hole free, if you go of road, get a plastic parts bag spray multi oil or duck oil liberaly into it, pull it over the motor and tie at neck with zip tie.

Cheers Bill but it's back on now and I'm NOT fighting with it again in the near future!!

It does see deep water on occasion but has survived up to now, possibly because it tends not to be glugy mud filled water? The actual solenoid plunger was clean and free.

Anyway have given it a liberal coating of waterproofing white grease.
