Any suggestions please, where one might be able to source a complete SSteel exhaust system for my 1989 Turbo 300 GD long wheelbase?

i had 1 made last year if you go for 62mm it will fit over the deisel tank

and out the back IMO better than side pipes

Adrian - I have been in touch with LongLife and they have quoted:

To design and build a Longlife Stainless Exhaust system from the cat/flexi section through to the rear silencer of your vehicle would cost £399inc vat and fitting.
Hand-building and fitting your custom made system takes approximately 3 hours by appointment at our Local centre at Fastfit Service Centre Basingstoke

I reckon that is pretty competitive.

Why do you reckon "out the back" is better?

Re: Stainless Steel Exhaust for 460 Turbo 300D

Having looked under the G it seems to me that the route(S) of the exhaust are ridiculously convoluted!  Why on earth cross over from right to left and add weight & complexity?  Someone out there must have created a better design.  I guess the answer is to ring all the guys on the "Where can I get" list - but "surely" GWOA must have reached a conclusion about the best option ...

Re: Stainless Steel Exhaust for 460 Turbo 300D

the Germans after they have fitted a turbo to there w460 usually take the

exhaust out through the inner wing and down behind the sill

and exit just in front of the back wheel

my exhaust did take all bloody day and cost extra but much neater

G-Mad

I am sorry I have rather hi-jacked your thread and I have a different G - 463 300GDL with the original 603 engine.

Have you called all the guys suggested in the "Where can I get ..." list?

If distance is no object then Tony Banks in Leeds is also a Longlife Franchisee. Remember the Franchise is only as good as the holder. I spent a lot of time researching a new cat-back system for my GS430. The nearest LL to me is dire, the next nearest quoted near enough double that of TB. I was recommended TB by folks on the MBClub board where several have used him. I'm booked in for next week.

Ian - Could I ask you to have a word with TB about a system on a 300GDL with a bog standard 603 in it?  Leeds is a long way from here, but getting it done properly is the way to go; perhaps he could comment on the Basingstoke LL - or even advise them, probably not as a franchise - why give away advice?  £399 in VAT suggests to me that they don't know what is involved.

Adrian - Who did yours?

It's a long way for me too, and I'm happy to ask. In fact it's the week after next I'm booked not next week as I said. For my GS430 he's quoted £400 +vat for with lifetime guarantee, or £350 +vat for 10 year guarantee. That's for a cat-back system which will take five hours to fabricate and fit. He has a  manual courtesy car if booked in advance.

If you want to talk to him yourself, here are his details:

TONY BANKS. PERFORMANCE CENTRE LEEDS

UNIT 6 LAKESIDE INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, TONG ROAD, LEEDS LS12 4QP

These people made a system for my old G and a few other G members have used them. Good work.

Any idea of the cost? I made enquiries of one outfit up that part of the world (not these folks) and they wanted the thick end of two thousand. It was not gold plated.

Be wary of cutting down on the number of silencers in the system. I thought the same as you that the system was very convoluted and did not need to cross over. I had a stainless exhaust made up with one long silencer and no cross over,  unfortunately  this reulted in a very loud exhaust.

I think the reason MB have the cross over is to have sufficient silencers in the system to achieve an acceptable  noise level.

A loud exhaust is fun for about 10 minutes then it just gets annoying.

Re: Stainless Steel Exhaust for 460 Turbo 300D

BigBlock - good point, but I have no intention of doing the design work... I am assuming that "they" know what they doing - if told that a Charlie-Racer with dustbins under the rear bumper is NOT want is wanted.  My CLK55 is loud and great fun when pushed, but delightfully quiet and pleasantly burbling when not, perhaps something similar can be achieved - indeed it must have been done already and there should no need for a re-invented wheel.  One lives in hope.

I had a CLK55 and thought it was quiet. Did someone before you alter it?

Re: Stainless Steel Exhaust for 460 Turbo 300D

Ian,

I had a system fitted which replicated the original system from the end of the downpipes to tail pipe. 10 y ago it was £800. It wasn't as quiet as the original but mine was a diesel, petrol would be quieter.

No - totally standard.  I am thinking of going Brabus ... or ProFusion

Re: Stainless Steel Exhaust for 460 Turbo 300D

I agree, but I did dump the final box that lies beneath the left side of the vehicle with no appreciable difference to noise level. I also temporarily deleted the silencer I had in place of the catalyst but that was unbearable on a long journey. My ge300 has a large stainless silencer on the right side and a small s/s silencer by the rear axle before exiting out on the left hand side in the wheel arch. Reasonably free flowing too with the addition of a k&n filter

the 460 300d only has 1 box but as g-mad has a turbo he needs a
