I upgraded my exhaust to stainless steel during this week. I have to thank Eddie (Needamerc) for the phone info on the day. The G is a M110.994 truck so a nice hum now.

See pic's below.

The real question here is, when I was getting it fabricated the fitter insisted that the two drop pipes became one and then he would separate it for the side pipes. He briefly talked about balancing and tuning of the engine as the reason.

I'm far from a exhaust expert so just wondering what the theory/thinking behind this?

Your fitter was probably talking about balancing the noise from either side.

Hi, what happens now when you go off road, the clearance has been significantly reduced, don't want to criticize but I don't think there was much thought put in to the routing?

I've heard several people on the LR forums (with the rover V8) talking about having the LH and RH banks of pipes "balanced" by joining them together as yours are.

Why, I don't know.

marginally reduced the silencer boxes fit into an empty area, there could have been no loss of space with one box only, by avoiding the pipe transit over the prop shaft

Re: SS exhaust for long wheel base

Hi Stig,

I had that conversation with the fitter. My G is in it's 33 year rolling (and basically all original) and while I own it, it will only be seeing easy/light green-laning at most. 95% of its time will be spend on a 5km stretch of road from home to work. The other 5% taking me on my little adventures.

That being said, what approach would be best to implement twin exhausts exiting in front of the rear tyres? On my RHD LWB W460 the driver side is straight forward enough by going back as per a normal MB exhaust system and then lift it up over the box frame and out at the wheel. The problem comes when you look at the passenger side, the fuel filter and accumulator are in the way of taking the same route as the driver side.

Has anyone gone down this road and got a good solution for all the off-roaders.

Re: SS exhaust for long wheel base

it doesn't need to exit in front of the wheels, it can exit in a line in front of the rear axle, my ge280 had this as a system, worked well, no need to go over the tank nor under the chassis rails on the sides
