Hi Mud,

I also have an import and just use a Tomtom for my mph readings. This might be your cheapest (and probably most reliable) way to get a simple mph display......plus you get a free satnav!

I think it's officially a requirement for the MOT and for registering imports, but some testing station don't check or take notice. On the later versions with the information-display in the middle of the speedo, they can be user-programmed to read MPH numerically.

Another source of overlays might be a used instrument cluster from a W124.

I changed the face on the speedo of my LHD. it is a very straight forward job and took my about 30 minutes.

Hi Howard,

When you took everything out, did the odometer reset itself, or remain at the correct reading as before?

Thanks in advance,

Phileas

Hi Phileas

I was carful to put the needle back in the position it came off, but I noticed it moved slightly when I first turned on the ignition which could be some form of self calibration. Once it was all back together I took the truck for a spin and checked it against the satnav. If the reading is incorrect its not a problem to reposition the needle.

Note: you don't have to remove the steering wheel to remove the instrument panel, but I would suggest you order the correct Merc tool for removing the cluster (approx £10). Have a chat with Gav.

Its one of those jobs which you think could end up being  a disaster, but its really very straight forward.

I think that the odometer mileage, if electronic, is stored in both the instrument binnacle electronics and the engine ECU. Both have to agree, so it's not possible to reset or swap without reprogramming.

In any case, taking the binnacle out is akin to disconnecting the battery, so no reason why anything should reset, except for perhaps the trip meter.
