I was off to Italy this week and 10 hrs into the journey, the damn speedo stopped working.
My biggest problem was that my fuel gauge doesnt read true and I was relying on the mileometer to tell me when to fill up again.I ended up using the clock and filling up after 4 hrs driving........maga problem as Italy was one big traffic jam.

I took the speedo out and everything seems to be connected so anybody have any ideas? :?

Can you check that the speedo cable is turning when the car is moving? If that is the case then the speedo unit is faulty, otherwise I´d suspect the cable itself. To test just detach the unit from the cable and move the car. Good luck

speedo

Speedo failures seem to be endemic. The speedo in my 280ge (87) works ok, but the odometer packs up after about 25 miles on a longish trip., and will start recording again the next day when he car is still cold ,; before it packs up again!! Result? a few raised eybrows in the local MOT garage every year. I was told in Greece that it is possible to send the speedometer to a VDO service center to have it overhauled with new kogs. Have you tried this?

You don't say which G you are talking about. The newer ones use an electronic sensor, but pre 1995-ish most were mechanical.

On the older ones, the most common failure points are either the speedo itself or the worm-gear drive unit on the transfer case. On 463s, if the cable core does not rotate, do not assume its a broken cable until you have checked it from both ends, as it's a hellish job to replace. Often it's the worm gear unit on the transfer case, which is a quick job.

is the worm gear unit the box at the back of the transfer box with a cable coming out that disapears into the trans tunnel after about 300mm?

Yep.

The procedure is thoroughly described in section 28.50 of the MB workshop manual.
