Hi All, Advice please on best way to cover the whole where my friend has removed the spare wheel and carrier on his 1993 W463. See attached picture with 3 black bungs that he has fitted, is there a better solution? Thanks.

The solution is dependent on how much you are willing to spend?

1) Have body shop fill and re-spray - Best result

2) Have some filler cut out of wood or plastic to the profiles of the hole areas. These machined or cut outs to sit flush with body line; cover the cut outs in slightly over sized dimension to the shape outline in vinyl of same body colour.

3) I like the option of just colouring the grommets - cheapest and least work.

Yes, indeed - a spare wheel ! To me, a G does not look right without one.

However, having said that, without the additional load of the spare wheels, the door supports are likely to last longer and the paint in the seams between the rear body panels less likely to crack from the added stress.

My friends never does anything other than potter round London so he's not bothered about carrying a spare. He also prefers the look of his car without the mount. Seems there isn't an official delete kit, I'll advise him to either go with the black bungs or get them body coloured. Thanks.

It's the current fashion. I've seen quite a few new models around London without the rear wheel or its carrier.

What about chrome-dome wheel bolts?

Or, for smoother look, chrome-dome bumper bolts from the good-old days?

:-)
