Can't easily photography it, but for those of you who are familiar with the way the front CVs are retained to the shafts with a circlip... whomever had these shafts out before has at some point sheered off one of the two 'tabs' that you would ordinarily use to compress the circlip to allow removal of the shaft... .ARGHHHHHHHH why can't people do things properly!!!!!

I've tried everything, can't get enough purchase on the snapped off side to compress it enough using the remaining tab. ANy more effort and the other side will break too I suspect.

Any suggestions? The CV is junk anyway so I can cut it off I suppose. Very frustrating!

This is brutal but it works and doesn't damage the half shaft.

Hold the half shaft vertically with the CV downwards. Then bash it off with a 4lb lump hammer, careful aim required as you don't want to touch the half shaft!

If you don't fancy that I don't see any other way but cutting it off.

If you grab the end that hasn't snapped off, with some vice grips or similar, you can normally pull the clip out, just try to pull straight so you don't snap it, or jam it against the side of the groove, it will uncurl and come out. Lever the grips against something as you have to pull pretty hard. If there is anything left of the broken tab, grind it with a die grinder so it's smooth and will slip around the groove easier.

I can not remember the tabs but I go along with Russ280; hammer it off.

It is possible to get that clip out, I've done it, but as Russ says, if you don't damage the shaft, and the CV is toast, I guess it doesn't matter, brutal though as he says..

I'm 75% sure that I'm going to replace the shaft with the RCV one anyway, but I'd rather not wreck a perferctly serviceble one if I can avoid it that's all (I need the CV off to measure the shaft one way or the other for RCV)

Half shaft in the vice cv facing down. Then get some squeeze outwards circlip pliers, you can do it.

Yip, that too Gordon, many solutions, but sometimes the bugger won't expand expand enough to let go. Either way, better than a hammer I think!
