Seized Sump Bung
as above on diesel, 14mm hex socket in bung, have had 15" Stillson on also to no effect, any suggestions?
Marcus
Have you tried applying some heat? Or with a hot engine?
Vise grips or mole grips .Used tight enough they will normally get the thing undone. Maybe file some flats on the nut to get additional grip.
Try giving it a sharp tap with a hammer directly on to the plug, then try to undo it again. Don't, however, smash it through the sump, 'cos, whilst effective at removing it, it's also a kinda permanent solution to the problem.

Rather weld on a piece of metal. Stay away with oxy-acet. Oil will ignite/explode given the right conditions - it is after all what ship-engines run on...
Another thing to do is to take the sump off. Then drill a 10mm hole in the middle of the plug. Now use a junior hacksaw blade and working from inside the sump, cut from the hole outwards, stopping just short of the threads in a star-formation. Working from the outside again, chisel horizontaly towards the middle of the plug, causing it to collapse/disintegrate with no damage to the sump at all.
Just give it a good clean afterwards - perfect opportunity to do it anyway...
Hi Marcus, Get a suitable flat end punch and rapidly but gently tap away moving the punch around the circumfrence of the bung just to vibrate and loosen up the thread, squirt some plus gas or similar on it and repeat the tapping till you get fed up. Then apply some heat with a propane blowtorch concentrating on the sump about 1.5 inches away from the bung to expand the metal around it. Don't hang around too long with the heat or the bung will expand as well so have your stilson ready. First you want to go clockwise ( yes i know this is to tighten it but this usually helps break the bond between the threads ) once you have applied some pressure in the wrong direction then try to unscrew. If it does move then gets tight again squirt some WD40 and take it back the other direction to clean the thread then unscrew and repeat this proccess until it is out. Do not try and force it if it is very hard to unscrew as this will no doubt result in a stripped thread. Just have patience and it will save you time and swearing in the long run. Have fun :)
Hmmmmm !!!
Quercus,
You win the prize for best understanding the question, and yes I have had my successes with impact engineering before, but :
I have already tried to shift when hot, like wot when one normally drains oil -- and
Have also tried impact driver, but was timerous of doing more harm than good ie punching bung into sump, not being sure how thick/robust area round bung is,
I will try extreme heat, oxy-acet , with caution however, having watched a lorry burn out at work yesterday and then
If all else fails can get a lump of steel welded on for extra purchase.
