I came across this link about the joys of a restored 460 compared to mod-cons.

If you can find and afford it, a restoration is a great thing.

A lot of money when you can buy a base ex military one for £10,000 or less,

http://www.ljacksonandco.com/index.php/search-results-by-description/art... need to phone for a price but they shouldn't be more than 10k

I think your pricing might be a bit out of date !

I quite fancied building one of these fancy convertibles (like the blue one below) out of a military Wolf and Jackson's quoted me £19,000 for the low mileage Wolf in the photo  and £15,000 for a pretty rough one.

Better project and price than this sheep in wolf's clothing. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1988-MERCEDES-G-WAGON-RARE-2-8-PETROL-BRABUS-... Simplicity is good, but more 463s will inevitably come through.

Paul that's actually quite a rare long wheelbase soft top. With a bit of work It could be converted with two rows of front facing passenger seats making it a comfortable six seater convertible G (see photos).

Re: Restored G versus new

I do like it and seeing one always reminds me of a white diesel convertible I missed buying in the early noughties, my fault I wasnt prepared to take a risk and it wasn't much money either, long b4 the prices took off and became stupid

Ah. G-Pricing.  Now there is an art.  Its all relative.  The high price of new drags up the prices of old.  The high price of spares (MB and OEM) means conversions and restorations cost serious money.  The constant march of rusting ensures there is always work to be done, and yet the ruggedness of the G enables it to take it.  Sometimes you see G's restored 2 or 3 times.

Add to that the topic of this post - old or new.   People are paying a premium for good, old 460s.

The scourge of modern electronics is the multiple ways they can throw a hissy fit and go home with the ball!  Limp mode, red warnings, elf and safety reasons etc.  There really should always be a back door to bypass such PITA events, to get you home or allow physical analysis of the problem.  Thankfully, electronics are remarkably robust, until you get water on them.

Re: Restored G versus new

Spending $90k on a pimped 90HP Wolf only makes sense in an overly enthusiastic moment.  A severe hangover is guaranteed thereafter.

I could not find the thread on the forum but I remember that recently a restored 300 convertible (with a 606 conversion?) failed to sell at auction at ~ £35k.
