My auto box on my '92 463 LWB is giving me a few kicks through the gear change. It isn't a lot at the moment but i have noticed it.

from looking at the other posts here and links, i guess the model is 722.3

My question:

I've been advised by my mechanic that it would be best with a rebuild. He changed the oil last week and what came out wasn't red as i guess it should be, but kind of brown. Signs of heavy wear and tear i am told!

But he has suggested a cost factor of around £1500 for the rebuild!?!? is that right?

What if i was to replace it? Does any other MB share this same gearbox? or can i get a good alternative? I've heard of some G owners taking them out of Sprinter vans!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Auto. Box

I had some problems with a previous auto. box. E.G refusing to change up when cold unless the rev's went up to 4000, rough changing etc. Dealer quoted £2500......gulp!

Went to Halfords and got, I think, some STP automatic transmission adative. Didn't have much faith, but it worked. Sold the cars 3 years later and it was still OK.

Worth a try? Even as temp. measure. Fluid and filter change as well of course.

Also I have seen a Merc. specialist in Birmingham. Recon. for a 460 £550. Guess the 463 had the dreaded electronic controls added though. Tried to find the name of the specialist but failed, sorry.

My 460 did start rough changing. There is a vacume pipe from the inlet manifold back to the box. Someone had not routed this correctly and it had melted through. Worth checking. Love auto's but who knows how they work!?

Suggest you talk to a specialist. When I discussed my problem most did just say fit a recon. However one a spoke to in Chester was not just trying to sell me a recon. box and pointed me in the right direction. I think a proper specialist can make some adjustments to the break bands etc. without resorting to taking your money for a recon. box.

Good luck,
Russ

If the oil is flushed through and changed you might get away with it as the old oil could have left a deposit in one of the valves. it may dislodge. Exchange auto box in NW10 around £800 fitted.
