Replace Window Rubber Trim - Doors Sticks closing
Hi Guys putting final touches to my 1988 gwagon. Bought new window rubber trim for the bottom/ledge of driver/passenger side door window as the other has brittled off.....i noticed by looking down inside there is clips..not sure how to remove this old window trim and replace with new (brake clips etc)...i also don't want it pressuring the power windows when coming up? PICS ATTACHED
Also the driver door i have to really push it hard to close properly...I've tried lubricating the joints but no success...any ideas guys..
Thx as always for advice/direction... tony
Mine is a 463 so might be slightly different but I replaced the rubber trim (I think they're called window scrapers) without any real problem - so it must be simple.
It was a while ago and I'm getting old so can't remember exactly the order but pretty sure I had to remove the door cards to start with.
The old strip came off pretty easily - just start at one end and work your way along. Maybe I was lucky but all of those clips stayed in place and looked in good shape so I didn't need to replace any.
The new strip went in pretty simply and I was able to use a flat headed screwdriver pushed up under each clip whilst pushing down on the rubber strip until it located firmly. Just worked my way from one end to the other. Just be careful not to put any pressure on the window glass with your screwdriver to avoid damage.
Then replaced door card - some of the plastic clips were pretty mangled but I'd bought some in advance so no real problem.
Not sure about the hard to close door. Is it only the driver's door? All the doors on my 300 need a really good slam to close if all the other doors and all the windows are also closed. To me, that's a good sign, it means everything fits really snugly. It's also been the way things were on other MBs that I've owned. Do you have the same problem if the window is open?
Yes, the paneling inside. But now, thinking about it, it might be possible to do the job without removing the paneling. You'd need a thin flat blade with a hook on the end - like a letter L. What you need is something to go underneath the clip but that you can pull upwards to stop the clip moving down whilst you push the strip down into it. So on my earlier example, you don't push down the rubber strip with the screwdriver, just use your fingers. Window in the down position whilst doing this.
Removing the old window scrapers was easy, just start at one end with a pair of pliers and once you've got it started you can just pull it up with your hand.
As I said, I found this an easy job - so it must be really simple!
Not sure what to suggest about the door mechanism sorry. Too technical for me.

First make sure that the door is correctly alligned when closed. The closing edge should sit proud of the body, by about 0.7 - 1.0 mm, to avoid air noise. If it sits too far back you will have trouble closing the door against the force of the door seals. If this part check out correctly, it may be that your door catch is aligned too high or too low or that the wedge-shaped mating surfaces on the door part are worn and no longer slide properly. It's probably a case, however, of just adjusting the catch on the door jamb.
The window scrapers can be replaced from the top without removing the door card.
I soaked the clips in WD40 first and then eased the clips off the old scraper one at a time with a flat bladed screwdriver.
Good luck
Thx Mark appreciated...
When you say door card i assume the paneling inside??
So i can pull UP/OUT (pliers) on the old window scrapers till they come out of the clips? and then push the new one into these clips with help of flat head...
Yep the drivers doors is the same with window down or up...where the handle of the door is is very hard and 80% of the time when i close the door it is 50% ajar....i have lubed the mechanism a few times incase it was rusted etc but still takes a good hard slam/push to close fully...
Thx Mark appreciated man..tony
