Morning all, the rear wiper on my swb has all of a sudden lost it's auto cut off, so when you turn the wiper off it just stops, it doesn't return to its normal position, also when you turn the intermittent switch on it runs continually, any advice. Thanks

Re: Rear wiper

Hi Spike

Two options for me, one easy to check one not so...

The front and rear wipers are both controlled by separate relays under the drivers side behind the fuse board

The relays are both identical so you could swap them over and see if the fault moves to the front

Failing that there is a mechanism in the motor that tells the relay when it is in the park position and to shut off

This could be broken, dirty etc not too easy to sort but a careful strip may reveal it, depends how much it bugs you!

Used motors on eBay come up on eBay for around £40 ish from time to time

Re: Rear wiper
hi mate... i had this exact problem.... it will be the relay... swap it for the one for the front wiper(in the fusebox/relay assembly..its bolted in and about the same size and shape as a box of cigarettes..... ) the relays are identical .... and see if it cures it... if it does... there you go... i ordered my replacement from a company online i found called starpartz... they have pictures of all the parts so you can see if yours has the same long number across the front.... the rear wiper relay is tucked up high under the dash on the drivers side.. two screws. and you have to lower the fusebox to get to it.... good luck! Re: Rear wiper
Hi Spike Good luck... Ive tried switch, relay and a 'in full working order' rear motor and still have to resort to what amounts to the nearest a 460 gets to in terms of 'involvement' motoring. Namely trying not to crash into the car in front whilst trying to 'park' the wiper manually. Mind you the comments ref the relay have got me in my loft retrieving the relay to see if it was beginners luck that meant I swapped the wrong one out and was in fact altering the front one. I'll peer higher up under the dash (with fuse relay dropped) this time to see if I was not high enough up. I'd appreciate you letting the forum know if you get this resolved, as I will if my relay hunt proves successful. Simon

Re: Rear wiper
Tried the relay - definately the right one. Still no joy :-) On mine I've tried dismantling the the motor and can't see (neither can the guys at the garage) how to get at the park break 'grove' so not sure how user servicable the motor is - hence why I got another one. Given an OEM one is circa £240 from memory and one got any views on how to get teh right motor from another source - they are Bosch after all? Ta Simon

Re: Rear wiper

You got the Bosch number off any of the motors?

Re: Rear wiper
Hi Gav just hit an ad break.... off to the loft to my own G parts dept :-).... Right exact (and all details) on the motor are BOSCH 058 BHO 12V 0390216 726... Might have to get a couple of the mudflap brackets off you as well. I'm sure having all the mud chucked up into the rear cavities is not the brightest idea. I'll pm you when I make my mind up :-) Ta Simon

Re: Rear wiper
Hi Gav As usual brilliant! Do you not need sleep :-). At £100 for a new one I'll get one, so I'm off to explore the links. My used one from eBay was more than that. Ta Simon

Re: Rear wiper

I am open to correction here but I am pretty sure the wiper is parked by the relay, not by a groove or whatever at the motor.

I hope I haven't just shot my street cred blush

Eddie.

Re: Rear wiper

I wish you were right... and I am definitely not in a position to offer 'better advice' but to date I have replaced the switch, relay (both OEM Thanks Gav) and installed a second hand wiper motor - to no avail :-). The last thought from the guys at the garage I use - who get used by most of the main dealers to sort electrical gremlins out - so don't get them started on JLR kit - is that the cut out 'should' be controlled by a grove on the motor (as per front ones) but it could be a diode on the motor that gets burnt out over time. I will say when I first opened the motor cover on the original motor it looked like it had been in about a week!! So I'm not sure as motors go they have a hard life, so I still remain dubious about the whole 'groove filled in, diode burnt out' thought, but I know squat about car electrics (ironical really as I bought the 460 to avoid electrical issues :-)) The only other info I can offer which relates to mine is that the fault seemed to coincide with a lot of bodywork during which they trailed the perm live from the rear door loom onto bare metal and fried a good bit of the rear loom, which had to be replaced (by an auto electrician) so unless he did something to mess up things between the relay and the motor?? All in all.. still thinking of getting a proper new motor :-) Simon

In my experience I have to concur ... When my wipers began stopping where they last we're when the switch was off... I changed the relay and it cured it... Did you find both the wiper relays? Perhaps if you post a pic of the one you changed in its location... I can tell you if it's the right one... Just removing the relay doesn't prevent the wiper motor running... It deals with interval and park.. Hope I'm helping ... I spent a lot of time on my electrics.. Regards John

Re: Rear wiper
Hi John All help gratefully received :-) I have found both relays the one for the rear (in mine) is screwed to the side of the footwell A post? so drop the fuse box, reach up past it along the A panel and there it is. I will nip out and do a Pic as I checked mine by pulling the lead lead from the relay, and my rear wiper would not work, which seems not to be what should have happened according to your comments above.. Perhaps it could be a wiring fault given the fact that the rear door wiring had to be replaced. From what you & Eddie are saying this might be the more likely culprit. Is it possible to 'wire' the rear wiper in so that no matter which way the dip switch is (on or intermittent) it simply acts as a on off i.e. they mix the permanent live up? or something similar (I am well beyond my electrical knowledge here - I tend to just keep trying different combinations till I find one that works :-). Just as a reminder though the rear door was wired back in by an auto electrician - but we all make mistakes. Your thoughts much appreciated Simon

Re: Rear wiper

Hi all, a bit late I know but recently my front wipers also lost both of the first two stages when switched on, (no intermittent no normal speed and no wipers when you push the screen wash, however they work on high speed but also have no park so they stop whenever you turn them off, I could live with rear one but the front are a real pain. I managed to get hold of two new wiper relays Bosch part number 0 335 320 015, they are the same for front and rear and today changed them both, (one of them not easy) it made absolutely no difference whatsoever to either front or rear!!

Re: Rear wiper

Evening all, a long time coming but the rear wiper has been done! It turns out to be a broken wire (the black and green one is the relay) it was broken as it came through the conduit between the door and the rear quarter panel quite a simple fix once found! No joy however with the front wipers, work in progress!! I have in the meantime purchased two wiper relays and one rear wiper motor all of which are surplus to requirements so if anyone is in need let me know.
