Can anyone give me a simple guide to replacing the rear wheel bearings. Do they have a collar pressed on to hold the bearing in ? Do you need to remove the rear diff lock actuator to remove halfshaft?

Thanks

Not knowing which model we are speaking of, the W460 has a tight fit of wheel bearing, removed and fitted on using the hydraulic press. The drive shaft slides out of the axle removing a bolted on cover plate

The W463 bearing is screwed on with a two post castle nut., which may be carefully chiseled off using a blunt chisel so not to cut into the nut material.

Sorry it is a 463, early 91 model. Think MOT will reject it . Is it straightforward once half shaft is removed?

Dont understand that?!?

460 and early 463 drum brake axle bearings are the same? The same set up? OK longer halfshafts and the inner nut has the ABS ring built in on the 463 but the design and methods are the same?

The later 463 with disc brakes are as described with a 2 pronged nut etc...? A LA Sprinter....

I will stand corrected by our Guru obviously.....

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Renewel

Early 460's had a shrink collar but later (I mean still quite early, early 80's on I suppose) use a big nut with two slots for a key, I'm assuming same on 463. Best to use the correct key to get the nut off and on, it's fairly tight, then locked in BOTH directions with a locking tab. Remove the shafts by unbolting the 6 nuts that hold the retaining plate, slide shaft out, no need to remove diff lock mechanism. Undo bearing retaining nut with key (relatively easy to make) then remove bearing, normally with a bearing remover, but can be carefully ground then split to remove. Seal ring will then come off along with secondary/dust seal. Replace in reverse order, bearing should be pressed on. Not such a difficult job with correct tools. Hope that helps.

Many thanks for that.

Gav , how much is correct tool for removing bearing collar? Don't fancy using chisel on that, unless new nut comes in Wheel bearing  kit?

No, nut is reusable, one is left hand thread as well, probably the left.
