Rear diff wont engage until front diff engages
I seem to have a bit of an odd situation, and I cant get my head around the logic of it,
Centre diff works fine, get yellow light then red light fine,
rear diff lock stays at yellow - tried stationary, tried backward, tried forwards. No change.
engage the front diff, get yellow light on front diff and then red, and hey presto the rear diff engages and get red light
Any ideas, have I done something wrong or electrical gremlin ?
Apologies if I'm stating the obvious but you need to be on something like gravel, grass or mud AND moving (slowly!) Preferably turning as well for the diff locks to engage.
As it does actually engage it doesn't sound too big an issue.
If, however, you do all of the above and it still act's in that sequence that suggests an issue with the electrical interlocks associated with the switches.
If you've just acquired the car maybe someone has messed with these? Some people try to defeat the MB system.
What year is the G?
I recall that on a 93 it's easy to swap the front and rear bulbs into the incorrect position if the centre console has been removed. See if you can confirm whether the mechanical is aligned with the electrical signals.
As Roly says, why not remove the the connector on the diff lock actuator, short out the two pin connectors on the cable and see if your red light shows on the dash? Not much aggro if the brass ring will undo
Sorry meant bridge contacts on wire end. As I remember brass collar is on the end of the diff actuator, should be hand tight though you might need need grips , remove that then you can unclip the connector. I would do this first before accessing centre panel.
Centre panel, remove steering wheel, wooden inlay strip, go very easy on that , some screws hold it behind inlay strip, but go easy as wires for the diff switches have very little give in them, so easy to make problems!
a question.....what happens when you engage all diffs and then deselect the front only; does the rear stay in ? As you know the correct sequence is centre, rear, front then front, rear and centre again. If your rear also deselects when you take out the front lock, then there is a cross wire between these two (i.e. the front thinks its the rear and the rear acts like the front - like the others said on this post, try seeing whether someone just didn't connect the bulbs up properly before going anywhere else).
Ph
Its a 1993 463, I had it about a year.
Yes it was on nice wet grass,
Will try it again turning a bit to see if it does make any difference to the rear diff locking.
Not a great issue as all locks up ok, though I do wonder if someone has been playing and either crossed the wiring for the front and red led crossed over or somehow wired the red led for the front and rear diff wired into series ?
Another other ideas ?
