Hi Bill,
What parts did you use (from which model) for the conversion?
or was it an off-the-shelf kit?
How about brake balance now? Is the master cylinder different too?
Interesting conversion for the off-road guys though...

No advantage, a costly white elephant, stick to drums on back, hardly notice the difference for a £1000. Been there don that.
Far from trying to pick up a fight.....
MB and SDP engineers decided to fit the G with rear drums because they reckoned that these could hold the car in a 1:1 incline withour resorting to a transmission handbrake as in some LR products.
The cost wasn't an issue back then so I don't see why it should be an advantage, other than those pointed out by Bill which look quite minor to me.
really depends on what the G is used for: offroad - drums, motorway - discs. So the early G's got drums and the late ones have discs. Unfortunately the advantages of both systems are not available in one. I'll stick with drums for my part :-) (and buy a set of 8.25 XZL for the 1000,-)
cheers - frank
I have removed the disc brakes from the rear axle of my 280. the disc and caliper are fine, but the hand brake shoes inside the disc clog up off road and cause excesive wear and heat this was causing cavitation of the brake fluid and ultimately brake failure.. Now I know why LR fit transmission parking brakes.
I have converted the rearbrakes back to drum and shoe but have replaced the standard lining with sinteret.
I will in due course fit the disc assy to my 300 tdi for motorway driving.
I did replace my drum rear axle too with an original post '97 disc axle. So far no problems with clogging the parking brake system.
Did your retrofit use the original 463 parts (or Sprinter)?

Biggest benefit is off roading. You don't loose your rear brakes when the water and mud get in, and its easier to vlean after.
Easy job for skilled engineer.
Cost around £1000. excluding labour costs.
