I have a 280 GE Auto SWB 1983. If I engage 4WD, the front wheel seems to lock up and there is a crunching noise like a broken bearing. Help :(

Sounds like you have a broken or worn cv joint
Does it make more noise when turning in 4wd (on soft ground) or all the time ?
Their is a company that sell re-con joints

Does the noise happen when at full steering lock either side? If so, I would suspect that either CV joint is worn, letting the balls inside the cage move about.

In the past, you'd have to replace the front half shafts but now you can buy new CV joints at: http://www.4x4gzr.de/mainframe.htm

You can buy CV joints for both 460 and 463 G-Wagens. You have to go to "G-Teile neu" >>> "Neuteile Vorderachse" >>> Antriebsgelenksatz Spidan VA ohne ABS >>> 2.11/ Sp-022690. The part is quoted at EURO 180 (some £ 124).
