I have a rattling engine, I have changed the hydraulic tappets, the injector nozzles, merc fuel filter, oil filter & oil and it is still rattling at only idle to 2000rpm. It is definetaly not a mechanical knock, as i have many verifications from many people. One guy said to me that it is piston slap from the fuel timing being out.
As soon as I put any strain on the engine below 2000rpm, it stops.

I have looked at my engine manual and there is nothing about the pump timing, can anyone help me?

Martin.

Rattling Diesel

hi martin
i am sorry to be vague but to diagnose a rattly diesel on the net is next to impossible but there are a few usual things on the 603 engine that you need to check.
1, the poly 'v'belt shock bushes rattle terribily when worn try jamming a screwdriver between the cylinder head and the shock top whilst the noise is present twist the screwdriver and see if the noise varies if it does then replace the shock use mb parts only for this i have tried most of the patterns parts and have been disappointed.
also check the alignment of the tensioner bearing this swivels on a large bearing and it is common for the bearing to fail, you can see if it has by looking from the top of the engine and aligning the poly belt pulleys up, the tensioner is the one in the centre of the engine and and will lean out so to speak if it has gone .
2, try to use a large screwdriver as a sounding tool put one end to your ear (best use the blunt end) and touch various parts of the engine and try to locate the general area where it is loudist pay particular attention to the area of the vaccuum pump as this can be a big problem especiallly if it fails and they do at great cost so make sure it is not the vaccuum pump.

I hope this helps and if not get back in touch and tell me what you have found out with the screwdriver technique
regards terry
