Hello everyone,

I am writing from Graz, Austria and I am new to this forum. I recently bought a Puch 280 GE which was made in 1986 - I have attached a photo so you have a clue what the vehicle looks like. The G is mostly in a complete and original state, which I like, but certainly requires some work to get it back on the road.

I have a first question (and I think many more will follow...): I noticed that the mileometer does not work. It is possible to reset the trip recorder to zero, but both the main mileometer and the trip recorder won't count anything. The speedo works, though. Do you have an idea what could be the problem and how to solve it? Any comments would be much appreciated!

Thanks for now and kind regards,
Constantin

Re Speedo,

Unfortunately sounds like your speedo head needs rebuilding, or exchanging for another one.

Presume there should be some 2nd hand in Graz?

A nice, clean model in its original form from the birth place of the G-Wagen.

Like to see it has it's original fog lamps and radio antenna.

The speedo head will need repairing or replacement - do log in the vehicle documents this change with dates and mileage of the change whether your repair the original speedo head or have it replaced.

Re: Puch 280 GE

Hello,

thanks for your replies! I think I will try to disassemble the speedo from the dashboard and see if I can find the problem.

Yes, the G looks good, but has a few problems:
1) The steering seems not to work properly, especially when you go straight ahead. In this case, it has quite a lot of play.
2) The brakes need attention. I think at least the discs are shot, since you feel some pulsation when you push the brake pedal.
3) It seems there is possibly a problem with the front LHS wheel bearing. The rim is dirty, it seems that grease is coming from the wheel hubs.

Any comments/ideas on these topic would be great as well!

Thanks and kind regards,
Constantin

Re: Puch 280 GE

Hello Constantin,

G-Wagens' tend to have some play in the steering wheel. From your last comment; I would suggest to you to have the front wheel bearing play checked and king pin bearing play. If these are excessive then you will need to consider renewing them. These, if adjusted just accelerate their failure. Check play at the drag link (steering link bar in front of front axle) and track/tie (steering link bar behind of front axle) rod ball joints. Any excessive play in these will affect the steering behavior and, or steering play. Excessively leaking grease and no excessive bearing play; you can renew the swivel seal without stripping down the whole hub as a split seal is available. Should the grease be leaking from inner side of the brake disc, then some stripping of the hub will be required. It is very rare for those seals to be leaking, I have never seen this happen.

Further check the pinch bolt is secure at the top and bottom universal joints (UJ) of the steering column shaft in side the cab, from steering wheel to bulk head and also in the engine compartment from bulk head to the steering box. Check the steering box is secure on the chassis frame.

Check front axle control arm bushes and bushes of the transverse control arm (bar fitted diagonally, in front of, front axle mounted at the axle and chassis frame).

If, after all these checks have been done and the play is excessive at the steering box, there is an adjustment for the box but, there is a 50:50 chance of the the bottom steering box seal developing a leak immediately after steering box adjustment.

Your compliant on pulsating brake pedal could be due to a wrapped brake disc, you could have these reskimmed or renewed as these are not very expensive. But if renewing discs, use a new set of brake pads. If skimming the disc, it is good practice to use  a new set of pads or brake material allowing, reface the brake pads face of the old pads. Very rarely, rear drum can be out of true giving some brake pulsation but I have never heard of this on a G-wagen.

Have the swivel hubs filled with grease every two years. Import Tip: Grease all the propshaft UJ's annually or every six months and shortly after Fording (driving through deep water). Keep the drain hole cleaned out at the bottom of the rear axle tube, on the back plate.

Pistonhead, Eddie,

thanks for your help! I will try to start working on the vehicle in the next weeks. I'll report as soon as I get there!
