Preparing for major servicing on older 'G's
Just a quick tip to home mechanics, and anyone wanting to keep the rust at bay.
Keep your old engine oil and mix it 50/50 with white spirit. Using a parrafin spray gun plaster the whole underside of the body and chassis. This will soak in over the next couple of weeks, and the acids present in old oil will attack the oxides of steel and aluminium. Follow it up with a similar spraying with waxoyl after the initial soaking has had time to act (usually 2 weeks).
Keep your clothes covered and use a mask. Dont spray your exhaust if you intend using it soon after - or boom!
I have found this to invaluable before major overhaul work on many cars, and my current project G is no exception!
John
I dont mean to be obtuse John but although it does work and I know this was common practise 20+ years ago It is not really a responsible thing to do in this day and age.
Oil..Especially USED OIL is extremely Carcinogenic it is harmful to wildlife, plantlife and humans. Fumes can also build up in cavities and could cause a fire or worse.
I dont profess to be a environmentalist but we have to be as responsible as we can. Used oil should always be disposed of correctly
I dont mean to be obtuse John .....I dont profess to be a environmentalist
Funny Jesus!!!
Please dont think I am preaching its not meant that way I am a vehicle fanatic too I even own a 1964 Jag S Type that does about 15mpg but i have heard some nightmare stories about used car oil You are just one person but imagine everyone doing it
If you get a minute check this web page out http://www.awma.org/education/oilspills.htm
If not EXCERPTS:
Sometimes when people change the oil in their cars, they dump the used, dirty oil on the ground or down the storm sewer. The rain carries the oil with the metals and particles from the car engine into streams and creeks. If you added up all the oil dumped on the ground in a year, it would equal or surpass a serious oil tanker spill.
When oil spills and mixes with rain water it can contaminate drinking water, kill fish and poison wildlife. Just one quart of oil may pollute up to 150,000 gallons of water
John I am not having a go, honest!! I just thought it needed to be said generally as not everyone may be as careful as you I wasnt talking to not just refering to you personally..
PS My Jag is concours and show room condition and does nt loose any oil I am afraid but I understand what you are saying.
Funny Jesus!!!
Hey, I was just making a joke to enlighten the discussion. BTW, I fully and unreservedly agree with your opinion on this matter. Cheers
I found it amusing Jesus it was real not sarcastic.. I should have used an emoticon
John I'm with you on this one ,
burned oil is good stuff , when used with discretion , but I can hardly comprehend that anyone would drain sump oil straight onto ground / into drain but then the people with immaculate shiny cars throw their rubbish out in the countryside !
Marcus
PS.
I will now keep my head down
Sorry Greeney, but used oil in the quantities I'm talking about wont cause any more pollution than one tank of diesel and is no more carcinogenic (in fact it is a lot less). What it is, is acidic - so along the the permeation properties of the white spirit, it frees up corroded nuts and bolts and acts as a very good barrier to rust.
I did say use protective clothing and mask! I reckon to using about 1.5 liters of the mixture on one underbody spray, ands that not on a regular basis - perhaps two treatments a year. Any overspray usually falls on my gravel drive and is just a misting which is hardly visible after rakeing in.
Incidentally my garden is overflowing with wildlife and none of the plants along side my drive are in any way harmed!
