what would be the problem fitting portal axles for a w461 on to a w460

or would it be quite simple using the same mounting kit springs ect

as just a upgrade on a 461 or is the w460 way different

                thanks adrian

Re: PORTAL AXLES

Hello Adrian,

I was not aware that the W461 had portal axles.

You can however get portal axle kits fitted to the W460. The kits are between £2000 - £2500 per side.

If as you say the W461 has portal axles; I would envisage it would be a matter of transferring front and rear axles, complete with brake calipers provided the transfer box set is the same as the W460's. I am referring the the direction of drive of the front and rear axle crown wheels. I know the W460 front and rear axle have different direction of rotation of the crown wheels, whereas the W463 have the same direction of rotation of the same.

On the basis that the W461 is almost a similar set as the W460 I betting that, the crown wheel direction of rotation is different as is on the W460. The other consideration is if the W460 is fitted with ABS, will the ABS off the donor axle fit the W460 set up? There are two different sensors in the ABS system; one uses three channel e only way to new axles is the configuration and the other is a four channel configuration.

Since the W461's are rare; getting donor axles off these would be a problem. Your alternative is to but new axles and my guesstimated price on these would easily be around £7000 mark each.

Your money would be better spent looking for a Unimog or Pinzgauer; already fitted with portal axles or a factory prepared W461 with portal axles, if source able.

Re: PORTAL AXLES

rakesh  i have seen conversion kits advertised for the 461

  with exchange axles

and was thinking if it would be compatible for the 460

what is the diff lock setup on the 461 same as 460 ?

are the axles the same width 460 as the 461?or 463

from what you say it will be possible

i will start doing some homework

with S-TEC as they will discount and have Pinzgauers

they look so cool 17cm wider and 16cm taller

                  thanks adrian

Re: PORTAL AXLES

Adrian.

Are S-Tec offering portal axle kits? Can you post or PM a link?

Any kits I have seen so far are megabucks.

This kit from GFG seems to include rear calipers, €13,000.

It is not clear to me if the kit is intended for W460 or W463.

Off topic, I LOVE the Paratrooper Mountain Bike with Run Flats:

How cool is that?

Re: PORTAL AXLES

Hi Adrian,

Check your PM.

Some Landy boys have used portal axles from a Volvo C303 Laplander; if they can do it, no reason why it can't be done on a G-Wagen.

Re: PORTAL AXLES

i think it maybe a late W461, with the GFG setup you would still need

shocks/springs/fender flares but no price from ORC and they want to

carry out the upgrade in there workshop
