pointless cigaratte lighter
Many G owners like me probably never use the cigarette lights in their trucks. So I thought I would take it out and put the cut out in the centre console to better use and install a USB socket, which are available from a number of outlets on the internet. Ideal for charging phones etc.
It took me a about a 10 minutes to remove the wooden panel to gain access to the socket on my 1999 463. I would say anybody with general skills could do the job them selves. To gain access to the securing screw for the panel ,remove the gaiter from the transfer box lever and you will see screw head. Remove the screw and black trim from around the gear selector and carefully lift the wooden panel from the transfer box end pulling it back at the same time. The front is secured with a slot across the front of the panel which slides over the plastic tray. I would suggest you always disconnect the battery fist.
good work, but it looks as if you've dismantled more than just the centre console (door?)
thx for the info howard. very clever upgrade. where did you get the usb connector from ? is it just universal usb cigarette lighter ?

Nice work, Howard. Looks factory installed. ; )
Get rid of the ash now Mr Green and fit your air ride control panel in slot
i did see the air suspension but at 5k baybe next year
but super cool
Good job Howard. When the lights are on, are the heater control sliders meant to illuminate?
who is supplying air suspension for the G?
montreal,
YES. You should have lights behind your heater sliders. I just fixed mine as well: take off panel, change the bulbs, put back panel and admire your handywork everytime you put on the lights. Very satisfying!

Hi,
The mod looks great, Can you point me in the direction of where to buy the USB socket please
Kind regards
Freddie
good job monty...dirty in that thing of yours.
I don't know why you bother when there very elegant USB converters designed for cigarette lighters (more pc 12v power supplies) that fit flush, have a slim handle so they can moved easily and you can even have one MB branded. You can buy a cheap two USB socket for less than a quid on eBay.
howard has to much time on his hands..since he sold his 110 landrover he has no tinkering to do..so had to find something on a g to change..even if it took hours..hours away from doing DIY in home are hrs well spent.
Ian good to see you the forum. I came across some old pictures of you in the old 280.
